You know you need insurance for your home, your vehicle and even items like RVs, golf carts and ATVs, but did you know you can also get insurance for your pets?
According to Investopedia and the 2019-2020 American Pet Products Association (APPA) National Pet Owners Survey, 67% of U.S. households own a pet, which equates to nearly 85 million homes.
These households spent a total of $97.1 billion in 2019 and $103.6 billion in 2020, with that number projected to rise to $109.6 billion in 2021.
Pet owners can buy insurance that covers the costs of accidents, injury, illness, hospitalization, emergency visits, surgeries and alternative therapy like behavioral issues related to anxiety, excessive licking, and destructive behavior.
You can also add preventative care plans on to the basic policy for an additional $10-$20 a month. The preventative care add-on covers teeth cleanings, annual exams, heartworm and flea prevention, urine and blood analysis.
More than 3.1 million pets were covered under a pet insurance policy in 2020 in the U.S., at a collective cost of $1.99 billion.
Trey Butler Insurance Agency is among the insurance companies that offer this specialized policy in addition to home, auto and commercial insurance policies. Trey is also the proud owner of two dogs, Sasha, 14, and Baxter who is a little over a year old.
Trey celebrated the third anniversary of his business in July, and the company offers pet insurance coverage through Hartville Pet Insurance which is a Liberty Mutual company.
“If you have a younger dog, it’s affordable and worth having,” Trey said, adding that his young dog Baxter has a policy that costs $18 a month. His older dog Sasha costs closer to $70 a month. Although policies tend to be more expensive for older dogs, the insurance does cover what could sometimes be staggering healthcare costs.
