In a world where schedules are packed and screens often fill the quiet moments, summer has the potential to become something sacred again - a season of scraped knees, new friendships, belly laughs, and memories that linger long after the school year begins. For families in Mount Juliet and the surrounding Wilson County area, Camp Mirage is helping make that kind of summer possible.
Originally founded 25 years ago in Plymouth, Michigan, Camp Mirage was created with a simple but powerful idea: give children the magic and camaraderie of a traditional overnight camp, all within a day camp setting. What began as a beloved local experience quickly grew into something bigger, and today, that same heart for childhood lives on right here in our community.
For local owners Jenna and Sean Gibbons, Camp Mirage is deeply personal. Both spent years working at the original Michigan camp while pursuing careers in education, forming lifelong connections and witnessing firsthand the impact summer camp can have on a child’s confidence, creativity, and sense of belonging. When the opportunity came to bring Camp Mirage to Mount Juliet, the decision felt natural.
“We’ve always believed in the life-changing power of summer camp,” Jenna shares. “It gives kids the chance to reclaim their childhood - to step away from constant technology and into experiences that encourage movement, creativity, teamwork, and real connection.”
One of the things that sets Camp Mirage apart is its remarkable variety. Rather than offering a single, one-size-fits-all experience, campers are invited to “build their own summer” by choosing from more than 40 different camp options. From adventure camps like NERF Battle Royale, Amazing Race, and Wild Child, to sports camps including pickleball, soccer, and street hockey, to creative offerings such as Hollywood Movie Making, Business Bootcamp, Bedroom Makeover, and Eras Tour Art Camp, no two weeks at Camp Mirage have to look the same.
Camp Mirage serves children entering kindergarten through eighth grade, with junior camps designed for younger campers and main camps for older kids. Each day begins with a joyful “morning bonfire,” where campers gather for announcements, jokes, challenges, and plenty of laughter. From there, children head into their individual camps, rotating through hands-on activities, games of Gaga Ball, slip-and-slide cool-downs, and friendly competition with fellow campers.
For families who need a longer day, Camp Mirage offers flexible after-camp programming until 5:30 p.m., featuring group games reminiscent of overnight camp traditions, themed days like Water Party or Dude Perfect Day, and relaxed moments that might include a board game and the camp’s “world-famous” popsicle.
But beyond the schedule and activities, what truly defines Camp Mirage is how children feel when they walk through the doors.
“Our hope is that kids can simply be themselves,” Jenna says. “The world puts a lot on kids today. Camp should be a place without stress or pressure - just encouragement, safety, and fun.”
That philosophy is woven into every aspect of the camp, from intentionally small group sizes to a carefully trained staff made up of passionate teens, college students, and educators who genuinely love working with kids. It’s why many families start with one week, and quickly add more after seeing their child come home tired, muddy, and happy.
In many ways, choosing summer camp is an investment - of time, resources, and trust. But it’s also an investment in something far more lasting: memories that shape who children become.
“Summer camp allows kids to step away from academic pressures and social stress,” Jenna explains. “Their job here is to have fun, try new things, meet new friends, and celebrate being a kid.”
As Camp Mirage continues to grow in Mount Juliet, its mission remains clear: to be a trusted pillar in the community and a place where childhood is protected, celebrated, and remembered.
