L Reaves Interiors is a boutique design firm based in Johns Creek. They specialize in renovations for clients in all stages of life, from young families to empty nesters. They’re passionate about designing homes that are as functional as they are beautiful, and accomplish this by getting to know their clients and how they live. Principal designer Lyn Reaves walks us through a completed project where she says that color and a lake view drove the design, but she also navigated the light and bright white living space with the goal of keeping a family-friendly environment in mind. “We like to choose fabrics that have some texture to them or a subtle tone-on-tone pattern. For large pieces, we’ll often use a neutral color and then add a pop of color and pattern on the pillows and throws,” Reaves says.
“We use all shades of whites and creams when choosing upholstery, but it must be a performance fabric,” Reaves explains. “Most of our clients have pets and young children, teenagers, or grandchildren, so easy to care for fabric is a must. We strongly believe that a home should be as functional as it is beautiful and choosing the right upholstery is a big part of that. The phrase, ‘Own your stuff, don’t let your stuff own you,’ is one that helps me guide my design choices. We can create a beautiful space, but if it doesn’t function for the client, it will lose its luster pretty quickly.”
Throughout the project, the client frequently used words like “soothing,” “calming,” and “spa-like” to describe the general vibe they wanted for their home. To accomplish this, blues and greens of varying shades were used throughout the main floor, but sea green was reserved for the main bedroom. “The creamy colors are a great backdrop for the pale blues, sea green and pops of mustard. These colors flow into the bathroom suite as well with the custom window treatment and vanity stool.” Reaves adds that lighting is among her favorite aspects of design and the fixtures in the en suite bathroom do not disappoint, “The touches of brushed brass throughout this suite add a touch of elegance without being too formal.”
Designers at L Reaves Interiors incorporate the old with the new so that the home reflects the client’s personality and helps tell their story through the design of their home. This goal is evidenced by blending the 1960s-style bar that is tucked away in the corner of the family room that was considered for removal. “The clients had lived in the home for a year before renovations started, but they ultimately decided to keep and update the bar,” Reaves says. “We chose to embrace its uniqueness and turn this area into a statement piece. We designed walnut cabinets with reeded fronts, ensuring ample storage, and soapstone countertops for easy maintenance.”
With this project, they got the result they set out to achieve. Fresh white paint and soothing blue and green accents make a calm and serene lake-view home.
