The first thing you notice at Chalet Blu isn’t the towering black ceiling or the dramatic wall of windows stretching toward the trees.
It’s the silence.
The kind interrupted only by crackling bonfires, distant loons, wind through white pines, and snow falling softly beyond the glass.
Tucked into Wisconsin’s Blue Hills, the striking black chalet feels less like a rental property and more like a dream pulled into reality through sheer determination. Before the dramatic great room, oversized spa shower, and cozy nights under the stars, there was only raw land, towering pine trees, and a camper parked in the woods.
For Lanee and Jason Noble, Chalet Blu became far more than a construction project. The property had long been part of Lanee’s family history. Her uncle Bob once dreamed of building a retirement home there after falling in love with the land’s towering white pines. After his passing, and following the recent loss of Jason’s parents, the couple found themselves thinking deeply about legacy, family, and creating something meaningful together.
So they bought the land from Lanee’s parents and began building.
What followed was nearly a year of balancing remote jobs while living off-grid in a camper through construction season. Before the well was operational, water had to be hauled manually using a kiddie pool in the back of Jason’s truck, pumps, and countless refill trips to her parents’ house.
Generator fuel runs became routine. Even the porta-potty cleaning truck became an oddly celebrated event.
And somehow, those difficult months became some of their favorite memories.
Most nights ended around a bonfire fueled by cleared brush and leftover construction scraps. Deer wandered past the camper in the mornings. Coyotes, frogs, owls, and distant wolves filled the night air beneath impossibly bright stars.
“We worked harder last summer than we ever had before,” Lanee says. “It was one of the most fulfilling and memorable times of our lives.”
The spirit of that experience is embedded throughout Chalet Blu, especially inside the now-iconic great room. The dramatic black interior ceiling nearly didn’t happen after multiple coats of paint, mounting frustration, and contractors unwilling to finish the towering tongue-and-groove installation high above the floor.
Eventually, the project became a full family effort involving scaffolding, hand-stained pine boards, and relatives climbing nearly to the peak while Jason cut boards below.
Today, that black ceiling has become one of the chalet’s defining features.
But what guests seem to love most isn’t just the architecture. It’s the feeling.
Chalet Blu invites people to slow down. To linger over coffee in the morning. To spend a little longer around the fire at night.
Days unfold through hikes in the Blue Hills, skiing at Christie Mountain, local wineries, and classic Wisconsin supper clubs before returning to crackling fires and complete stillness.
“It’s a step back in time,” Lanee says. “Where nature sets the rhythm of the day and people still help each other without expecting anything in return.”
And maybe that’s what makes Chalet Blu unforgettable.
Not just the soaring windows. Not the handcrafted details. Not even the stars overhead.
It’s the reminder that places like this still exist.
