Jaine in a Bottle

Celebrating Strong Women and Good Wine

One of Washington’s greatest vintners launches a new line celebrating strong women and the wine they love.

Jaine from Mathews Winery is a highly curated collection that showcases only whites and rosés. The initial launch includes Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Rosé. There will also be a sparkling in the near future -- a nod to the line’s namesake, who adored champagne.

The collection is inspired by the savvy small business owner who helped build the winery.

“The original Jaine was the family matriarch,” says Marketing Manager Leah Bobson. “Her name was Mary Jane, and she was a social, connected, positive person. She brought people together. She traveled the world. Her grandchildren, who help run the winery, remember her as someone who was fun, vibrant, loving, active, engaging, and smart.”

Bobson says the line is intended to celebrate women like Jaine: “She creates. She travels. She dreams. She gathers. She lives well. She is Jaine.”

Focusing solely on whites and rosés is a bold move -- and a somewhat rare one in the industry.

“It may be one of the few, if not the only, brand in the state doing so,” Bobson says. “Its design is also focused around a lifestyle we want to portray, rather than solely about the wine itself. The wine is crafted from select vineyard sites located in the Yakima Valley and Royal Slope region of the Columbia Valley. Each bottle is made from hand-picked grapes thoughtfully produced using sustainable farming practices and minimal intervention.”

“Jaine inspires us to celebrate life’s beautiful moments in the company of others,” says Bobson. “We hope these wines are around the little moments in someone’s life where everything is as it should be.”

Mathews Winery continues to have women like Jaine at the helm of the business, such as Diane Otis.

“My mom... in large part, helped resurrect the Matthews brand, and continues to work every day making sure the operation is running smoothly,” says Bryan Otis. “The winery wouldn’t be where it is today without her.”

Otis says the Jaine line is a result of “a combination of all sorts of wonderful things coming together at the right time: incredible vineyards, a world-class winemaking team that excels at white wines, and a bunch of my staff and friends who were eager to get involved with the brand. And a place in the market that this brand can live that isn’t already being done. I have to pinch myself with how easy this has all been, really.”

He describes the wines as “light, crisp, and refreshing that will drink well at any time of day. They are great to pair with healthier, more plant-based meals and they have lower alcohol content.”

Creating the line was a labor of love, Otis says; love of the region, love of the wine, and love of the lives it's meant to celebrate.

“I’ve spent the last three years tracking down the very best vineyards for white wines in Washington, and Jaine is the result,” he says. “It’s really a love letter to how great Washington State white wines and rosés can be. There is so much adventure ahead, and we are thrilled to finally have Jaine ready (to) share with others.”

Jaine wines retail for $24 ($17 for Wine Club members). They are available at Mathews Winery Tasting Room + Farm in Woodinville and at specialty wine shops and independent restaurants. You can also peruse their selection online.
