We just got back from a two-week trip to Northern Italy with a group of friends to celebrate our oldest daughter Addison’s high school graduation. This wasn’t an escorted tour or a cruise but a self-planned adventure, allowing us to explore and make our own discoveries.
The Journey Begins in Paris
Our journey began with a flight into Paris, where we spent a day soaking in the sights. The Eiffel Tower was breathtaking, and our tour guide made the history come alive. Although one day isn't enough to truly experience Paris, seeing the Eiffel Tower and learning about its history was a highlight.
Exploring Rome
From Paris, we flew to Rome on EasyJet. Rome was our first major stop in Italy, and we stayed in the Campo de' Fiori area. The food in Italy was fantastic, and every meal felt like an event. Even simple lunches were multi-course affairs, and we were introduced to digestive drinks like Amaro, which, despite their taste, helped settle our stomachs after the hearty meals.
Rome’s historical sites were awe-inspiring. The Colosseum took our breath away, and the Trevi Fountain was another marvel, especially when viewed at night. Vatican City was another highlight, with the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling by Michelangelo and Raphael’s "The School of Athens" being standout pieces.
A Breath of Fresh Air in Verona
After Rome, we took a train to Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet. Staying at a winery bed and breakfast outside the city was a refreshing change from the bustling streets of Rome. Verona was smaller and more peaceful, with its own charm. We enjoyed walking the cobblestone streets, listening to street musicians, and soaking in the local culture.
One of the highlights in Verona was visiting Juliet's balcony, a must-see for any fan of Shakespeare. Standing on the balcony, surrounded by the romantic atmosphere, we couldn't help but feel a connection to the timeless love story.
The Magic of Venice
A day trip to Venice was like stepping into a postcard. The city of canals exceeded our expectations. We rode a gondola, explored the Grand Canal, and admired Venetian glasswork. Venice was pricier compared to other cities we visited, but the unique experience was worth it.
We also explored the Doge's Palace and St. Mark's Square. The Doge's Palace, with its opulent rooms and intricate artwork, gave us a glimpse into the grandeur of Venetian history. St. Mark's Square, bustling with activity, was the perfect place to soak in the lively atmosphere and enjoy a coffee at one of its historic cafes.
The Beauty of Cinque Terre
Our adventure continued with a visit to the stunning Cinque Terre, a string of five picturesque villages along the Italian Riviera. We had the opportunity to explore Manarola, Corniglia, and Vernazza.
In Manarola, we were captivated by the colorful houses perched on cliffs overlooking the sea. The village's narrow streets and scenic vistas made for perfect photo opportunities. Corniglia, situated on a hilltop, offered breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline. The climb up to the village was well worth the effort for the incredible scenery and charming atmosphere.
Vernazza was perhaps our favorite, with its beautiful harbor and lively piazza. We enjoyed wandering through the narrow streets, sampling local seafood, and soaking in the relaxed, coastal vibe. Each village in Cinque Terre had its unique charm, and the stunning landscapes made this part of our trip truly unforgettable.
Artistic Florence
Our final destination was Florence, known for its rich art and history. We climbed the 463 steps of the Duomo for a stunning view of the city and marveled at the works of art housed in its museums.
We also explored the Medici Chapel, which is a hidden gem of Florence. The Chapel is home to the tombs of the powerful Medici family and features stunning sculptures by Michelangelo. The intricate marble work and the serene atmosphere made it a memorable experience.
Another highlight was our visit to the Uffizi Museum. The Uffizi's vast collection of Renaissance art is truly impressive. We were particularly struck by Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus" and "Primavera," which are even more magnificent in person. The museum's layout allowed us to appreciate the progression of art from the Medieval period to the Renaissance, making it a rich educational experience as well.
Of course, no visit to Florence would be complete without seeing Michelangelo's David. Standing before this iconic statue, we were in awe of its size and the incredible detail. It's a masterpiece that truly encapsulates the artistic spirit of the Renaissance.
A Culinary Journey
One of the most memorable aspects of our trip was the food. Italians have an incredible commitment to quality ingredients and take great pride in their culinary traditions. Every meal, from simple lunches to elaborate dinners, was a celebration of flavors and presentation.
In Rome, we indulged in fresh pasta dishes, each bite bursting with rich, authentic flavors. Italian pizzas were unique to each region and all were delicious. Venice introduced us to unique seafood dishes, beautifully prepared and presented. In Florence, we savored the famed Florentine steak, cooked to perfection and served with a side of local Tuscan wine.
Every region we visited had its own specialties, and the local ingredients were always of the highest quality. The pride in their food culture was evident in every bite, making our culinary experiences just as memorable as the sights we saw.
Reflections on Our Italian Adventure
Each city offered a unique glimpse into Italy’s rich history and vibrant culture. From the grandeur of Rome to the romantic charm of Verona and the enchanting canals of Venice, our journey was filled with unforgettable experiences. Florence, with its artistic heritage and iconic landmarks, was the perfect end to our trip.
Traveling through Italy with family and friends, making memories, and experiencing the local culture was an adventure we’ll cherish forever. Whether you're planning a similar trip or just dreaming of Italy, we hope our experiences inspire you to explore this beautiful country.
