No matter how long you’ve been in Texas, you most certainly know choosing a Mexican eatery is taken very seriously around here. Indisputably a staple in southeast Texas–everyone has their favorite dish. But what really makes a Mexican restaurant set apart from the rest?
Juanita’s is more than just a favorite local lunch spot and gathering place to devour delicious food with family and friends—although it’s definitely that too! Since opening a second location in May 2021, Juanita’s continues its legacy of using fresh, quality ingredients in their tasty dishes made lovingly from scratch every day. This attention to detail is why the restaurants are a favorite in the Cypress area and well-loved by their loyal customers after 13 years.
Family-owned and operated, Juanita’s is run by the son, and grandchildren of the restaurant’s namesake, Angel Nunez, his son Miguel and daughter Bianca. You’ll find all three working in one of the restaurants along with their staff. When speaking with the Nunez family, it is immediately evident how much pride they take in the restaurants, quality dishes and in serving the community.
“Whether it’s waiting tables, or behind the bar making drinks, being a dishwasher, a hostess, or helping with to-go orders and even in the kitchen, cooking, like our father,” Miguel says, “we are always hands-on.”
When Angel opened his first restaurant location, he gathered his family’s recipes that had been lovingly developed by his mother in Guanajuato, Mexico. Juanita’s recipes are still the focus of the menu today. Each dish served at Juanita’s shows a genuine passion for appetizing dishes, made fresh every single day, always with quality ingredients.
“Our most popular dish has to be the Birria Tacos,” Miguel says. The dish features marinated and braised short rib, served in quesa-tacos with melted cheese and a guajilo chile dipping sauce that one might sip from a straw with little encouragement.
Juanita’s cocktails, like their food, are always made with quality ingredients, including their delicious, hand-shaken margaritas. Billed as the strongest in Cypress, all margaritas are made fresh in-house and never with a puree. Enjoy one of their house margaritas during Happy Hour at the Juanita’s Cypress location all-day Mondays, and Tuesday-Friday from 11 am-6 pm.
If weekend brunch is what you need in your life, Juanita’s has something for everyone. The brunch menu features a decadent array of dishes, such as dulce de leche stuffed churros, fried avocado stuffed with chicken or beef, and a fajita omelet, as well as staples like huevos rancheros and chilaquiles. Try these dishes or choose from many more classic menu items, all offering a unique experience for your taste buds. And don’t forget to order a flight of mimosas.
