How a simple medical glove inspired the creation of a local nonprofit.
In the sterile, often intimidating environment of an emergency room, the smallest gesture of warmth can alter a child’s entire world. For Stephen and Nicole Mack, this realization came during a frantic evening in February 2022.
Their young daughter, Savannah—affectionately known as Savvy—had fallen while playing. This required an unexpected rush to the hospital for stitches. In the panic, she left her beloved teddy bear behind. Distressed and in an unfamiliar place, Savannah was inconsolable. That is, until a compassionate medical staff member blew up a glove, drew a cheerful face on it, and handed it to her.
From an Auction to an Organization
Fast forward to 2024. Stephen and Nicole were browsing a local auction website when they spotted a bulk order of stuffed animals. Remembering the comfort a simple toy brought their daughter during her hospital visit, they purchased the lot and donated it to Intermountain Medical Center.
The feeling of giving back resonated so deeply with the Mack family that they knew they couldn't stop at just one donation. Thus, Savvy's Stuffies was born. Named after their brave little girl who inspired it all, the organization is now an official nonprofit dedicated to providing stuffed animals to children facing frightening medical or emergency situations.
The Mechanics of Kindness
Operating a nonprofit that donates directly to medical facilities requires meticulous attention to detail. Hospitals have strict regulations regarding hygiene and allergies. To maintain the effort, the Macks work directly with a distributor to purchase high-quality, brand-new teddy bears.
The Macks have expanded their philanthropic footprint. Today, their pristine bears bring solace to children at McKay-Dee Hospital, Ogden Regional, and through first responders like the Weber County Sheriff's Department.
A Family Mission
For Stephen and Nicole, the ultimate reward lies in sharing this ongoing journey with Savannah. By taking her along to make the hospital deliveries, they are allowing her to experience the joy of charity firsthand, instilling a lifelong lesson in empathy and community care.
