There are three components to any functional and showstopping kitchen: lighting, counter space, and storage.

Light is can completely transform a space, making it appear more open. If you are able, use windows that go from floor to ceiling, or consider adding a sliding glass door to bring in as much natural light as possible. Your overhead lighting is just as important. Choose fixtures that add light, rather than taking away or dimming it. Consider pendant lights with completely clear glass instead of frosted or covered housings. Dark space under cabinets? Light it up with task lighting.

Counter space is essential for any home chef. But if you don't have a lot, an island is a great solution. Not only do you get a custom amount of space, but it is also ideal for additional storage and seating.

Storage options are creative and custom. Your space can be built and created around your needs. Add some shelving on one end for cookbooks, outlets or anything you would like to store and showcase.

Once you have these key focus areas worked out, you can dive into more specific areas—the hardware on your cabinets, your faucets, the seating options at your island or the focal points at the top of your cabinets. If you have a strong foundation, you can add smaller, more specific elements over time.
