Knox Heritage’s annual Scruffy City Soirée is like prom for people who get excited about adaptive reuse, original windows and old buildings narrowly escaping the wrecking ball. Knoxville City Lifestyle was honored to be the presenting media sponsor for this year’s event, which took place at The Mill & Mine on Sept. 11.

This year’s Preservationists of the Year honor was received by Jeffrey Nash and Jeffrey DeAlejandro of The Courtland Group. Founder Nash’s work over the last 25+ years has played an important role in revitalizing downtown and surrounding neighborhoods, taking chances on historic buildings and seeing potential in places others may have overlooked.

The evening brought together preservationists, community leaders and supporters for dinner, live music, a whiskey pull and a live auction, all in support of Knox Heritage’s year-round preservation work. And while the party is always a good one, the mission is serious: protecting the buildings and places that tell Knoxville’s story, and helping ensure they remain part of the city’s future.
