As a way to honor people you may recognize, Kona Coast Magazine collected some words from the library’s staff team. To all of them, thank you for what you do every day.

Julia, Children's Librarian

I find the public library the place where I serve my community most. I love bringing characters to life by reading aloud and seeing children become deeply immersed in stories as they progress from listening to reading independently. I hope the kids in our community see this space as their own, so this past year I helped them create a mural with their ideas and illustrations. I cherish every drawing and letter of gratitude I receive, and I am humbled and honored to see the walls become covered in them!

Devin, Library Assistant

Working at the library is great because it is a peaceful and welcoming place where people can learn, grow and connect. I enjoy helping visitors find books, information and resources they need. Every day can be different, so the work stays interesting and enjoyable. Working at a library also gives me the opportunity to support students, families and the community. Most importantly, it feels rewarding to help create a positive environment where everyone feels comfortable learning and exploring.

Kau'i, Teen Librarian

As access to books and free, public spaces becomes more restricted, public libraries are a rare haven where anyone can read any book they choose or attend any event that sparks their curiosity. It is always encouraging to hear how much our patrons appreciate their public library, especially our teens. Time is precious, and there are many other places—digital and physical—where they can choose to invest their free time. It is an honor to serve as a third space they are eager to be in, where they feel comfortable and called to connect with their peers, our collections and our services.

Finding Library Joy by Nikki A., Library Assistant

I find library joy

In little faces that light up as I hand them stickers,

In the soft thankful touch of an auntie needing help with printing,

In each patron that knows me by name, and those that don’t.

I find library joy

In silly teen antics whose safe space is with us,

In every patron asking, “when will you do this again?”,

In my co-workers extending help beyond what is asked of them.

I find library joy

In every tirelessly working volunteer, shelving, cleaning, & helping,

In the overflowing donations from our neighbors,

In being part of my community.

Allison Holbrook, Branch Manager

I've said the phrase "libraries are about more than just books" many, many times. In my experience, public libraries offer many other opportunities to participate in society as a whole and as a healthy human being. I have been in some of the same situations as our patrons where the public library was my lifeline. The library offered a compassionate staff, computers, job-searching and life-skills resources, and especially a safe space during a difficult time. I'm honored to give my time to a special place where everyone is welcomed, respected and treated with the utmost aloha, no matter who they are.

Colin, Library Technician

I chose to work at the library because I wanted a job where I could help people, and libraries are important to the community. From providing a wide choice of materials to read and a wide range of programs that help build a community space. I enjoy helping patrons find their next book or research specific subjects. I also process the new books so there’s always a new selection for patrons.
