A beautiful room often starts with a single element that sets the direction for everything else. For many Kansas City homeowners and designers, that element is natural stone.
At Stratus Surfaces, the design process begins with exploration. The Lenexa showroom and slab gallery give homeowners and design professionals an opportunity to see materials in person, compare options and discover surfaces that can shape the look and feel of an entire space.
“Our role is to be a resource and a partner to the people creating spaces throughout Kansas City,” says Meg Russell, marketing director for Stratus Surfaces. “What makes that community special is the care that goes into the work. There is an appreciation for craftsmanship and creating homes with character, and we enjoy being part of that process.”
Stratus Surfaces works with interior designers, architects, builders and homeowners throughout the selection process. Some clients arrive knowing exactly what they want, while others are still looking for inspiration. Either way, the process starts with a conversation about the project, how the space will be used and what matters most to the client.
Plans, inspiration photos and finish samples can help establish a direction, but seeing the slabs in person often becomes the turning point.
“A sample shows only a small part of the story,” Russell says. “Seeing the full slab reveals the scale of the veining, shifts in color and the relationship between quieter areas and more expressive movement.”
That perspective can make all the difference when selecting a material for a large kitchen island, fireplace surround, backsplash or bathroom vanity. A dramatic pattern that feels overwhelming in a small sample can become a stunning focal point when viewed across an entire slab. Likewise, subtle movement and texture can add depth without dominating a room.
The goal is not simply to find something beautiful. It is to find a surface that works with the way a space will actually be lived in.
“A busy family kitchen may call for a different conversation than a decorative fireplace surround,” Russell says. “We consider the desired look alongside care expectations and the intended application. The right selection should feel at home in the design and make sense for the people who will live with it.”
That approach is particularly relevant as homeowners become more interested in natural materials with personality. According to Russell, warmer tones are gaining popularity as homeowners move away from cooler palettes. Quartzites with rich color and expressive movement are also attracting attention, including greens, blues, warm golds and earthy undertones.
Rather than designing a room and selecting a surface to simply match it, more clients are allowing the stone itself to influence the direction of the design.
“Clients are becoming more comfortable letting the stone guide the design, choosing surrounding finishes that bring out the colors within the slab,” Russell says.
One recent Kansas City project featuring Emerald Lagoon Quartzite demonstrates the impact that approach can have. With rich green tones and natural movement, the stone becomes a defining feature of the space without feeling forced.
“It shows how a colorful natural material can feel sophisticated and create a lasting impression,” Russell says.
For Stratus Surfaces, the appeal of natural stone goes beyond current trends. Every slab has its own variations in color, movement and texture, making it difficult to duplicate exactly. Those characteristics can give a home a sense of individuality that feels more personal than simply following a popular design style.
“Choosing a slab because you connect with it creates a more personal starting point than choosing something solely because it is popular,” Russell says. “That connection can outlast a trend.”
That personal connection is often discovered through conversation. Designers may notice a particular color that complements a fabric or finish, while a homeowner may be drawn to one distinctive detail in the stone. The selection process becomes collaborative, with each person bringing a different perspective to the project.
“The exchange of ideas” is what Russell says the local team enjoys most about working with the Kansas City design community. “Each person brings a different perspective, and it is rewarding for our team to see a material through their eyes.”
For homeowners beginning a project, the process does not have to start with a fully developed plan. Stratus Surfaces welcomes both homeowners and trade professionals who are ready to make a selection as well as those who are simply beginning to explore possibilities.
“You do not need to have everything figured out before visiting,” Russell says.
The showroom offers a place to slow down, see the materials at full scale and consider how they might work within a home. Once a material is selected, Stratus Surfaces works with the client's chosen fabricator, who handles the purchase, fabrication and installation.
Ultimately, choosing a surface is about more than selecting a countertop or backsplash. Natural stone can become the foundation for a room's personality, bringing color, texture and movement into the design in a way that feels inherently unique.
“We want our showroom to support that discovery while helping teams make informed selections for their projects,” Russell says.
