Many people dread taking a professional headshot. Thankfully, most of the work to create a great headshot rests on the photographer. The gear, the posing, and the editing are ultimately what transforms a regular photo into a compelling headshot.
That leaves only one thing left for you to prepare—and that’s what to wear. It can feel a bit like rocket science, but it can be distilled to just a few tips: wear something that fits well, will coordinate with many backgrounds and colors, and makes you feel confident.
To find your best look, start by pulling items from your closet that fit perfectly. Avoid that too-snug suit or your pants that drag on the floor. Items that are too baggy or loose can also make you appear larger on camera, so aim for something that is tailored without being tight.
From there, look at colors and patterns. Navy blue, jewel tones, soft neutrals, and muted earth tones are the best colors to wear for headshots. But keep in mind that using colors from your brand or that complement your background may also be a good match. You may consider wearing a branded shirt, but keep in mind that if you leave that company or brand, your headshot may not travel well with you.
On the day of your session, make sure you’re well rested and well groomed. Professional hair and makeup may help add a layer of confidence, and your photographer should be able to suggest a great artist. Arrive in a simple outfit with your shoot outfit hanging and pressed.
