Hooch and Fast Cars

This summer take a road trip and visit Savoy Automobile Museum, presenting a star-studded line-up of exhibitions, presentations, and special events. Here’s a sneak peek of what they have in store.

Most of us will never get our photos taken with Tom Cruise or Dustin Hoffman. However, in Savoy’s Movie Cars exhibition visitors can pose by the 1949 Buick Roadmaster convertible that both stars drove in the movie “Rain Man.”

The link between NASCAR drivers and moonshine runners was based on the need for speed. Both groups shared tips and tricks to boost horsepower. During Prohibition, the automobile became one of the prime methods of distributing illegal alcohol. The Moonshine Runners exhibition features vehicles for delivering the goods while outrunning the law.

In Savoy’s Great Hall, the first of two exhibitions from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is on display. Most aren’t race winners, but have a special place in automotive racing history. Mark your calendars for two special events in August. The first weekend of August will feature programs for children and adults with Wayne Carini, and Jay Ward, creator of the movie “Cars.” A special guest appearance by Lightning McQueen is also on tap. On Saturday, August 17 the museum’s showgrounds will host The Connection car show.

Summer at Savoy is filled with things to do. Friday night movies, guest speaker presentations, special events, and exhibitions that change monthly provide opportunities to explore the wonderful world of the automobile.

You can’t spell Cartersville without CAR.
