Small town, Big stories

A few of our favorite places and the unique stories behind them.

Give Thanks

The one where customers vowed to continue traditions.

Gerald Matthes founded Give Thanks Bakery in 1998 after a successful career in global advertising in New York and Detroit. Born in Germany and raised in England, Gerald pursued his advertising dreams in New York but had learned bread baking early in life. His family's baking tradition began in Braunsbach, Germany, where his grandson August Matthes started a guest house and bakery. Two generations later, Wilhelm Matthes expanded the business into 33 outlets across England over 80 years, before it was sold in the late 1970s. On a business trip, Gerald visited Braunsbach and was inspired to open a European-style bakery in 1997. He partnered with Jean-Marc Seranon, a pastry chef from Nice, France, and later Trale Broudy, an artisan bread baker from California, joined the team. In January 2021, Katy and Dietrich Knoer, longtime friends and customers of the bakery, acquired Give Thanks Bakery from Gerald, who is now retired. They are committed to continuing the rich tradition established since 1998.

Lipuma’s Coney Island

The one with the line down the sidewalk.

Lipuma's Coney Island is more than just a restaurant; it’s a beloved part of Rochester’s history, built on dreams, determination, and heart. Founded in 1969 by Bill Lipuma, this iconic eatery is a local landmark, serving up classic coney dogs with a side of family spirit.  Before opening Lipuma’s, Bill ran several successful establishments in Detroit, including Orbits and Mondos. But something about Rochester captured his imagination. Sunday drives through its rolling hills inspired him to bring his next vision to life.  Encouraged by his father’s work ethic, Bill approached his mother, Carmela Lipuma, with his dream. One Christmas, she gifted him $5,000 to help start his restaurant at 621 North Main Street, Rochester, by the Paint Creek River.  Lipuma's became known for its delicious hot dogs, blending global flavors with classic Detroit coney dogs. After nearly 30 years, Bill passed the business to his son, Tony Lipuma, whose warmth and humor have made him a beloved figure, continuing the family legacy for over 50 years.

Home Bakery

The one that baked for Katy Perry and Aerosmith

Home Bakery, a treasured fixture in Rochester, Michigan, boasts a rich history intertwined with its iconic building. Established in 1929 by George and Anna Grainger, the bakery is renowned for its high-quality baked goods. However, its history extends far beyond its establishment. The building, known as The Rollin Sprague Building or "The Old Stone Store" is the oldest commercial building in Rochester.  Rollin Sprague, a prominent local physician had the building built in 1849.  Designed by English stonemason Thomas Anscomb, the structure features unique coursed cobblestone walls, making it one of the few of its kind in Michigan. Over the decades, the building served various purposes, from a general store to a poolroom and car dealerships. In 1947, the Scha-Ben bakery opened in the space, eventually rebranded as Home Bakery in 1954. The building has undergone several renovations, including a significant Victorian-style makeover in 1899 and a restoration in 1995, which revealed indigenous remains, linking the site to a Native American burial ground. Home Bakery has remained a family-owned gem throughout its history. The Kuczajada family, who acquired the bakery in the 1980s, elevated its reputation with innovative cake designs and won numerous awards. Their meticulous restoration of the building also earned it a place on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2014, Heather Tocco took over, bringing her creative flair to the bakery. Under her ownership, Home Bakery has gained celebrity attention, baking cakes for high-profile clients like Katy Perry and Aerosmith. Tocco's team of decorators continues to push boundaries with elaborate designs, making Home Bakery a beloved landmark in Rochester and a beacon of artisanal craftsmanship.

Kruse and Muer on Main/Chop House/Cabin Kruser's

The one that includes a story of being lost at sea.

Chuck Muer, known for Charley’s Crab restaurants, and Bill Kruse began their friendship in 1972 when Bill was hired as an Assistant Dining Room Manager. Sharing a passion for great food and good times, the two became close friends. In 1988, when Bill decided to start his own venture, Chuck, confident in its success, invested and even lent his name to the business. Kruse & Muer Quality Foods opened in what is now The Village of Rochester Hills.  Tragically, in 1993, Chuck Muer, his wife Betty, and their friends George and Lynn Drummy were lost at sea while sailing in the Bahamas. They attempted to race back to Florida ahead of a freak cyclone. The last presumed location of their boat, “Charley’s Crab,” was in the Gulf Stream off Florida's east coast. The swift currents of the Gulf Stream have kept the sea's secrets well. The story of their disappearance is displayed on the walls of Kruse and Muer on Main, keeping Chuck’s memory alive in the place he helped build.

Yates
