Inspector Josephine Black and the Case of the Missing Mona Lisa is a children's tale about a girl detective who cracks the case of the world-famous stolen artwork. In her search, she discovers the thief's motive is loneliness and wishes only to have a kind smile sent his way. It's a lesson in friendship while also demonstrating the consequences of our actions. The book is based on true historical events - a thief actually stored the stolen masterpiece in a case in his room!
Beyond the initial story and as an afterword, an introduction is made of the truest friend we have in Jesus Christ. Implied through Biblical principles of friendship, commitment, and loyalty throughout the pages, an explanation of who Jesus was and is provides an opportunity for further exploration.
The illustrations include works of art found in the Louvre Museum at the time of one of the historical thefts. The very creative illustrator and artist, Jose Portillo, meticulously studied details of the Louvre which are reflected in the book including the marble floors, wall paneling, and the placement of art installations. Local to Celina, Jose and Niki worked closely on the development of Inspector Josephine Black as a "character next door" and placed an emphasis on diversity in the supporting characters. Jose heard the author's desire for texture and authenticity and history and created a world of detailed wonder.
The book was written in response to the silly rhymes author Niki Carbajal made up while raising lots of kids. Other adventures with Inspector Black are rattling around in her head including, Tombs of the Pharaohs and the Great Wall of China. Focusing on history and fun to create lasting lessons is the focus of future books.
