Serving the Conejo Valley for more than 51 years, Los Robles Health System is starting the New Year off with new technology, an expanded facility, an internal medicine residency program slated with a summer start, and much more.
Some notable firsts in 2019 at Los Robles include the Comaneci used for the treatment of life-threatening brain aneuryrsm and the MitraClipTM G4 Device for minimally invasive treatment for patients suffering from mitral valve regurgitation—a leaky heart valve. In late July 2019, stroke specialist Dr. Asif Taqi used the Comaneci Embolization Assist Device to treat 53-year-old Maria Cram’s aneurysm and to prevent a second rupture that could potentially have taken Cram's life at Los Robles Hospital. It was the first time the device—approved by the FDA in May—was used in the United States.
Another first at Los Robles was the use of the Mitraclip G4 in early November. The structural heart team—Dr. Vishva Dev, Dr. Gregory Fontana, Dr. Andrew Ghobriel and Dr. Saibal Kar, a lead investigator of the clinical trials which led to the approval of this therapy in the U.S., who recently moved to this community—treated two patients with severe mitral regurgitation. Recently approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), these patients are the first in the world to be treated with this minimally invasive valve repair device which reduces the risk of heart failure.
Looking toward firsts in 2020, Los Robles will be the first hospital in Southern California to have the Monarch Robotic Endoscopy technology in its robotic surgery program. The Monarch is used to view and navigate inside of patients’ lungs to obtain a tissue sample for biopsy. The technology allows physicians to reach further into the periphery of the lung into hard to reach nodules and allows doctors to diagnose suspected lung cancer earlier and more accurately, resulting in improved survival rates.
For their youngest patients, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Los Robles will soon have NICVIEWTM technology which allows parents and loved ones to see their newborn 24/7 via livestream. The hospital has recently expanded its pediatric surgical capabilities as well with the addition of Phillip K. Frykman, MD, PhD, a leading board-certified pediatric surgeon. The hospital also offers pediatric orthopedics and plastic surgery.
More exciting developments at the hospital include the addition of an internal medicine residency program starting in the summer of 2020.
“We’re responding to the need to bring new physicians into the community as many of our physicians retire,” says Natalie Mussi, President and CEO. The main hospital campus of Los Robles continues its ongoing expansion that will see the Emergency Department grow from 23 to 36 bays in 2021. The more than $100 million investment will also result in enhanced imaging and surgery services, in addition to redesigned and refreshed floors throughout the hospital.
“This expansion means more expert care close to home,” says Mussi.
