Jennifer Vinson-Hill was doing just about everything right, but something still felt off. She had a thriving career hosting women’s retreats around the world, but the travel meant missing her daughter’s high school years. And after countless nights sleeping on a flat air mattress during those events, the adventure was beginning to feel more like a sacrifice. There had to be a better way.
Her fiancé came up with the idea: Buy Airstreams and build mobile hotels. Not a cabin or a rental house, but something that could appear on a vineyard, a lakeshore, or a private ranch ... and vanish just as quietly when the weekend was over.
“People want comfort. They want to be outdoors, but they don’t want to give up luxury. They don’t want to give up something to get something,” Vinson explains.
So they visited an RV dealership, toured a few different models, and walked out with two Airstreams. The Wandering Sanctuary was born.
What followed was a meticulous refinement of every element inside those silver shells, complete with luxury sheets, coffee makers, snacks, lighting, and a signature diffuser scent. Outside each unit were chairs, string lights, and a glow designed to signal that something special is about to happen.
“Your body immediately starts to relax,” Vinson says. “Then you walk in and see the welcome basket—you just know things are about to get good.”
The first guests called her afterward and said they would never travel any other way. “They had parked it at the edge of a lake,” Vinson recalls. “Every morning they woke up with the sunrise; every evening they went to bed under a sky full of stars. I still get goosebumps thinking about that phone call.”
The Wandering Sanctuary has grown quickly. Nine units now serve a mix of private lodging guests and event clients. The company provided lounge spaces and VIP retreats for South by Southwest activations. In July, seven units went to Lockhart for Fourth of July celebrations and a grand unveiling at Proto-Town. The Airstreams ran fully off-grid on quiet propane generators, a self-contained village within the festival grounds.
The business caters to an unexpected niche in football season hospitality, providing premium guest quarters for ranch and property owners hosting visitors for big games. “When you park one of these by your pool with string lights,” Vinson says, “that’s a serious upgrade. Your guests have their own separate space while still being part of your world.”
The Wandering Sanctuary partners with RV resorts across Dripping Springs, Johnson City, and Wimberley, handling every detail for guests who want a turnkey experience. “We take care of everything. You just have to get yourself here.”
