For nearly a half-century, Heartland Dermatology has been the hallmark provider of exceptional skin care across the state of Kansas. Founded in Northwest Kansas in 1977 by Dr. Wallace Weber, the practice was built on a foundation of advanced dermatological treatment paired with a personal, patient-first approach. What began as Heartland Dermatology in Hays, Great Bend, and Smith Center, has since grown into a powerhouse operation, serving 18 communities across the state and cementing its reputation for excellence.
Heartland Dermatology was established at a time when dermatology was still an emerging specialty in many parts of Kansas. Dr. Weber was the sole dermatologist in western Kansas, west of Hutchinson, and he envisioned a clinic that combined cutting-edge treatments with a warm, community-focused environment. Early on, the clinic earned a reputation for effectively treating complex skin conditions, from acne and eczema to skin cancer.
Over the years, Heartland Dermatology attracted talented dermatologists who shared Dr. Weber’s vision, allowing the practice to grow beyond its roots. In 2003, Dr. Weber retired, and passed the baton to Dr. Matthew Shaffer, a natural leader who sought to modernize the practice while maintaining its core values. Dr. Shaffer, a native of Salina, subsequently opened a new clinic in his hometown, in addition to the two flagship clinics in Hays & Great Bend. This period saw the adoption of advanced medical technologies and a focus on expanding services to include cosmetic dermatology alongside medical and surgical care.
Over the past two decades, Heartland Dermatology has embraced innovations such as Mohs micrographic surgery, laser treatments, and phototherapy, making it a leader in treating skin cancer and other chronic conditions. The clinic also began offering Heartland Aesthetica - cosmetic services such as Botox, fillers, and chemical peels, broadening its appeal to a diverse patient population.
As Heartland Dermatology expanded its services, its leaders recognized a growing demand for dermatological services in underserved areas of rural Kansas. By establishing satellite clinics and forming partnerships with local healthcare providers, the practice became a vital resource for patients in both urban centers and rural communities. By 2018, the company started to vastly expand their reach.
This commitment to accessibility laid the groundwork for its acquisition of Manhattan Dermatology, a well-established practice that shared Heartland’s mission of delivering compassionate, high-quality care.
In January 2024, Heartland Dermatology officially welcomed the clinic formerly known as Manhattan Dermatology into its family. This strategic acquisition brought together two trusted names in Kansas dermatology, offering patients an even greater range of services and expertise.
Manhattan Dermatology, founded in the early 1990’s, had built a strong reputation in Riley County and the surrounding areas. Led by Dr. David Harden, and known for its skilled practitioners and friendly staff, the clinic specialized in both medical and cosmetic dermatology, including the treatment of skin cancers, acne, and psoriasis.
The integration of Manhattan Dermatology into Heartland’s network was seamless, thanks to the shared values and patient-centric cultures of both organizations. Patients benefited from access to a broader pool of specialists and state-of-the-art technology, while Heartland Dermatology solidified its presence in northeast Kansas.
January 2025 marks a milestone in Heartland Dermatology’s journey: the first anniversary of its acquisition of Manhattan Dermatology, a step that further expanded its reach and impact while upholding its commitment to patient care.
The one-year anniversary of this acquisition is a testament to the success of Heartland Dermatology’s vision. Over the past year, the Manhattan clinic has not only retained its loyal patient base but also attracted new patients seeking expert care in a welcoming environment.
One of the key achievements since the acquisition has been the expansion of services at the Manhattan location. Heartland Dermatology invested in new equipment and training, enabling the clinic to offer advanced treatments such as Mohs surgery, which handles Basal and Squamous Cell Carcinomas. Its superiority over other techniques lies in the precise removal of an invasive tumor that may twist and tunnel under the skin, and remain unnoticed by the normal eye. The addition of Dr. Jack Rickstrew, a board-certified dermatologist & double-fellowship trained Mohs Micrographic and Reconstructive Surgeon has been a huge addition to Manhattan’s clinic.
As Heartland Dermatology celebrates this milestone, its leaders remain focused on the future. Plans are underway to further expand the Manhattan clinic, including the addition of more providers and extended hours to accommodate growing demand.
Heartland Dermatology also continues to invest in research and education, ensuring its team stays at the forefront of dermatological advancements. From exploring new treatments for psoriasis to expanding cosmetic offerings, the practice is dedicated to providing cutting-edge care while maintaining the personalized touch that has defined it for decades.
The story of Heartland Dermatology is one of growth, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to patients. From its humble beginnings in Western Kansas, to its current role as a leader in Kansas dermatology, the practice has remained true to its founding principles. Across the state, they saw120,000 patient visits last year, and had diagnosed nearly 10,000 skin cancers.
The acquisition of Manhattan Dermatology is a shining example of this legacy in action. By bringing two exceptional practices together, Heartland Dermatology has strengthened its ability to serve Kansans with the care and compassion they deserve.
As we look back on the past year and the many milestones along the way, it’s clear that Heartland Dermatology’s best days are still ahead. Here’s to another half-century of helping patients achieve healthy, beautiful skin and another chapter in a history that continues to inspire.
