Masciadrelli and Son Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc.

Local Business Stays in the Family

After 34 years of customized sales, installation, and service, Masciadrelli Heating and Air Conditioning has changed its name to Masciadrelli and Son.

“The whole family is excited about it,” Greg Masciadrelli, this local business’s owner and founder, said. It’s Greg’s youngest son, Jack, who has committed to joining the trade.

Throughout his teens, Jack spent summers and holidays “doing whatever needed to be done” at his father’s side. When he graduated from high school in 2020, he knew exactly what he wanted to do. He entered STCC’s Energy Systems Technology Program on a two-year path to becoming a licensed HVAC professional.

He said it’s a career he loves because it offers something new every day.

“There’s a little bit of all trades mixed in with it. There’s electrical work you have to look through. Plumbing here and there,” Jack said. This A student also likes the challenge of entrepreneurship. By partnering with his dad, he hopes to help the business grow.

According to Greg, “He knows the work, and he knows how hard it can be at times. You’re always the one on the job. You never want to see somebody go without heat overnight.”

As a result, Greg works seven days a week and just about every holiday.

“I’m 57. I’d like to be able to retire someday,” he said. “Jack will be the one who helps me get there.”

Right now, however, there’s no rest for the weary.

“With the pandemic, we’ve been doing quite a bit of indoor air quality installations, just trying to keep the houses healthy,” Greg said. The systems he and Jack install are energy recovery ventilators, which exchange outdoor air for stale air while using the air’s energy to ventilate the house.

“It’s a little technical,” Greg said, “but it works really well.”

The team has also been installing steam humidifiers into homes with forced hot air. Gauged correctly, the right humidity makes winter heat cozier without turning up the thermostat. With the new systems, Greg said, “The steam is very clean. There’s no mold build-up like with the old humidifiers.”

The Masciadrellis have been busiest of all with ductless mini split heat pumps. “These are the most up-and-coming systems. They’ve really become popular because there are some very good rebates from the energy companies,” Greg said. Offering warmth and A/C all in one system, heat pumps are acclaimed for their energy efficiency, even at sub-zero temperatures.

For Greg, keeping his business in the family means keeping the work ethic he’s shown his customers over the years. He appreciates Jack’s energy, and Jack lauds his father’s expertise.

“When you call Masciadrelli and Son, you know what you’re going to get,” Greg’s wife, Lisa, said. “It’s the same person you see on the baseball field, at the grocery store, on the ski slope. Our customers are our neighbors, our friends, our parents’ friends. They really rely on us.”

“Jack likes to figure things out, make things work, and take care of people,” Lisa continued. “It makes me proud knowing that’s who this business will be handed to.”

And what are Greg’s plans when he finally retires?

“I’ll probably work for Jack,” he laughed.
