Match Maker Mason

Meet Mason, Our 2023 Doggie Cover Model Contest Winner

When Kate McGann of Bernardsville rescued Mason from See Spot Rescued in Jersey City, she didn’t realize he was going to help her to find love. Mason—originally named “Hugh Grant” by the rescue—has played a huge role in Kate and her husband Jameel’s love story.

It started when Jameel Misbahuddin went a local watering hole with some friends. They recognized Kate, but only via the dog park and exclusively as “Mason’s Mom.” Due to Mason, the pair hit it off, and he was able to be a special part of their dates and even their wedding—as the ring bearer! The couple says that Mason seemed to know it was a big deal, watching quietly and intently as they said their vows and throughout the entire ceremony.

Mason, a true mix of everything from Pit to Lab to Akita, grew along with his family and has recently turned five years old. No longer a puppy who absolutely destroys shoes when given the chance, Mason has some adorable new habits. Now, when Jameel and Kate go out, Mason will still steal their shoes, but instead of tearing them apart, he will sleep with them. Although the habit can’t really be explained, it has turned into a fun game for the couple, getting to see which person’s shoe Mason had decided to cuddle up with this time.

Although Mason has had a history of eating everything in sight—ranging from tennis balls to mulch—he has a much healthier palate now. Even though he never begs, Mason has been deemed a “healthy human food eater,” eating blueberries, bananas, carrots, peanut butter in toys and even scrambled eggs! He certainly loves fruit: One time, he picked up a large honeydew melon in a supermarket parking lot and carried it blocks home, making lots of people laugh on his way.

Mason is a complete people pleaser: Dog walkers praise him for being so good. Mason won’t be the star for the family for too much longer, though, as the couple is expecting a baby. When asked how they thought Mason would cope with no longer being the star of the family, they said that just like their wedding, he will understand how monumental the occasion is.
