How Melissa Combines Construction Knowledge and Real Estate Expertise

For Melissa DeCristofaro Arcudi, real estate is more than a career—it is part of her family's story.

Long before she earned her real estate license, Melissa was immersed in the industry through her family's construction and real estate businesses. Today, as a Sales Associate with Kienlen Lattmann Sotheby's International Realty in Basking Ridge, she combines years of industry experience, local market knowledge and a people first approach that helps buyers and sellers navigate one of life's biggest decisions.

Interestingly, Melissa's path into real estate was not a direct one.

At just 20 years old, she began working behind the scenes for her family's construction company, Castle Ridge Construction, where she handled much of the administrative and operational side of the business. While construction was her day to day focus, real estate was never far away. Both of her parents, Marshall and Anne DeCristofaro, built careers in the industry, giving Melissa a unique perspective that began long before she considered becoming an agent herself.

"I grew up around real estate," she says. "My parents have been in the business for decades, so it was always part of our conversations and our lives."

When the COVID-19 pandemic prompted many people to reevaluate their careers, Melissa saw an opportunity to pursue something that combined her existing experience with a lifelong familiarity. She obtained her real estate license and joined her parents' team, officially stepping into an industry she had been connected to for years.

For the past two years, Melissa focused heavily on REO properties—real estate owned homes that have been acquired by banks. The role gave her valuable experience working with distressed properties throughout New Jersey and a well rounded understanding of the broader housing market.

"I missed the more meaningful connection with buyers and sellers," she says. "REO work is naturally more transaction focused, and it reinforced for me that what I find most rewarding is building relationships with buyers and sellers, understanding what's important to them and guiding them through every step of the process."

That realization led her to shift her focus back to traditional residential real estate in her local market.

Today, Melissa works primarily in the communities she knows best.

She grew up in Long Hill Township, moved to Bernardsville as a young adult and has called Basking Ridge home for more than 10 years. She has a deep appreciation for Somerset County and the surrounding area, and she takes pride in helping others put down roots there as well.

"It's a wonderful place to live," she says. "We have beautiful communities, great restaurants and excellent shopping, all while being close enough for commuters who need access to New York City."

Her local knowledge is complemented by another advantage: the construction experience she gained through years of working with Castle Ridge Construction.

Because of that experience, Melissa understands homes from a different perspective. She is often able to recognize details that buyers may overlook and can help clients better understand a property's condition, potential improvements and overall value.

"I've been around construction for so long that I naturally look at homes through that lens," she says. "And when questions come up, I have access to incredible resources and professionals who can help provide answers."

Equally important is the mentorship she continues to receive from her parents, whose decades of experience have helped shape her approach to the business.

While Melissa values market knowledge and industry expertise, she believes the most important part of her job is communication.

Education is often the first thing she focuses on when meeting a new client.

Whether someone is buying a first home, selling a longtime residence or relocating to a new community, Melissa believes understanding the process is essential.

"As agents, we sometimes forget that not everyone speaks real estate every day," she says. "My goal is to educate clients from the beginning so they know what to expect, understand each step and feel confident throughout the transaction."

That commitment to guidance and transparency extends throughout every stage of the buying and selling journey. Melissa encourages clients to ask questions, stay informed and rely on professional expertise when making important decisions.

"My job is to provide the facts, explain the options and help clients make informed decisions," she says. "The process becomes much smoother when people feel supported and understand what's happening every step of the way."

As she continues growing her business, Melissa is excited about her decision to join Kienlen Lattmann Sotheby's International Realty.

The brokerage appealed to her because it combines local ownership and community connections with the global reach of the Sotheby's International Realty network.

"It felt like the best of both worlds," she says. "We have a strong local presence and an incredible team, but we also have access to global marketing resources that help showcase properties to a much larger audience."

For Melissa, the move aligns with the way she approaches her business by combining personalized service with powerful resources.

At the heart of it all is a desire to help people. Melissa remains focused on building lasting relationships and serving as a resource for clients before, during and after the transaction.

Real estate has always been part of her family's foundation. Today, Melissa is building a career that reflects her own experience, perspective and commitment to helping others.
