What's in a name? Everything, if your name is Hadley and you operate a home improvement business in Grosse Pointe.
Dominic Hadley would know. He runs Grosse Pointe Painters in partnership with his father, Bill, who founded the company in 1975 and expanded it (by popular demand) to Hadley Home Improvement. That history means everything to Dominic, who grew up in the family business.
"We've been in Grosse Pointe our whole lives," says Dom, who estimates that 95 percent of Hadley's business is in Grosse Pointe. "Our customers like that we are a family-owned business. They know us and trust us. We stand behind our work."
Dom's leadership has been instrumental in the growth of Grosse Pointe Painters, overseeing a team of 12. Hadley Home Improvement, on the other hand, has flourished under his guidance, employing 75, including a crew of roofers. Dom's age was never a hindrance, as he quickly expanded the team. "We treat our employees like family," Dom says, reflecting the company's values.
Dom grew up watching his dad and learned a lot. By the time he was in middle school, he was working alongside his mother in her business breeding hamsters for wholesale supply to pet stores. He graduated high school, attended class for a year at Macomb Community College, and decided there was nothing better than learning about business in the real world. "For me, the best way to learn is working with someone who has been doing it for 50 years, and that's my dad." They work closely, meeting weekly to review the business and bounce ideas off each other. Additional services and synergies are available from Hadley Real Estate, run by Dom's brother.
It's a winning business model for Grosse Pointe. "Everyone knows everyone here," Dom points out. "There is always a connection. You feel like you are closer to your customer in Grosse Pointe, and your customer feels closer to you."
