A man’s testosterone production peaks at about 25 years of age.  Beyond that, it starts to decline at a rate of 3 to 5% a year.  In fact, a man in his thirties can see a testosterone drop as much as 30 to 40% of his peak. Testosterone is responsible for building muscles and strength, distributing fat, producing sperm, maintaining healthy bone density, generating and maintaining a healthy red blood cell count, and a libido. Testosterone is also responsible for some 3,000 functions in the body. Proper testosterone levels (or lack of) can have a huge impact on how a man feels and how active he is.

Dr. Kevin Shelton, MD has been practicing family medicine for more than 23 years. He graduated and finished his residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. During his residency, he developed a special interest in hormone therapy along with the impact that it has on the body. At that time, there were not a lot of practitioners in the field of hormone therapy and it was just minimally covered in most medical schools. It has been a labor of love to research and develop therapies that he sees benefiting his clients.

Dr. Shelton’s clients, typically men in their forties and fifties, come to him with a myriad of negative conditions which can include - decline in physical and mental energy, excess weight gain around the midsection, and the onset and development of other health concerns such as heart disease and diabetes. Dr. Shelton’s patients typically start with a full panel of bloodwork followed by a comprehensive meeting whereby Dr. Shelton and his team discuss with their patient the results of the bloodwork. The discussion can include the impact of their unique health conditions on overall health and the goals to mitigate its impact. Most patients can start treatment right away with options varying from creams, patches, and injections depending on the patient’s overall health, wellness, and goals. Hormone treatment therapy has been particularly beneficial for first responders, military personnel, and athletes who need to remain in peak physical condition.

In addition to hormone therapy, Dr. Shelton and his wife Stephanie Shelton, an RN and Family Nurse Practitioner, recommend that men watch their weight, exercise three to four times a week, and get plenty of rest. A healthy diet should include healthy proteins in moderation, plenty of fiber from fresh fruits and vegetables (including leafy greens) as well as whole grains. They also recommend eating foods that are high in omega-3, magnesium, potassium and lycopene. Supplements of these important nutrients can be helpful when dietary goals cannot be achieved.

Dr. Shelton also has three key recommendations that men can do to improve their overall health and prevent many diseases. These include: 1) Starting in your thirties have regular blood work done to stay on top of any changes in your health. 2) Develop a relationship with a primary doctor and have an annual physical. And 3) Stay on schedule with routine preventative tests such as a colonoscopy, eye examinations, skin cancer screening, a testicular exam, a prostate cancer screening.

While 75% of Dr. Shelton’s practice is focused on men’s health and wellness, he has seen that women can benefit from hormone therapy in combination with holistic therapies to provide a better balance in progesterone and testosterone as they age. Elite Wellness and Anti-Aging also offers women's pellets and estrogen.

Dr. Shelton and his team have enjoyed practicing medicine and raising their families in Celina. He loves the way Celina allows him to get to know his patients and their families personally. It is a unique environment to practice medicine.
