A hidden little spot on Cypress Rosehill Road is home to one of Cypress’s newest craft brewing operations, Misfit Outpost. A collaboration between Fortress Beerworks in Spring and local brewer Juan Sanchez, Misfit is a hub for lovers of craft beer, live music and hearty burgers. The restaurant and beer joint is located on the property of what used to be The Shack Burger Resort. The property’s iconic wooden “shack” outback still stands, but underwent a makeover from its new ownership. Misfit’s backyard also boasts a kid's play area complete with a creatively refurbished school bus and giant tractor tires for climbing or hiding. Misfit earned its name from Juan, who wanted to reflect his love for horror movies and characters–the ultimate misfits of society. We reached out to Kevin Smith with Fortress Beerworks to learn more about their partnership.
What is the connection between Misfit and Fortress Beerworks?
Fortress is an existing brewery in Spring that we aligned with early on in this project. Juan Sanchez and Dion Billard collaborated on an incredible beer called Northwest Corridor that really took the Hazy IPA market by storm and it made us all take a step back and think, wow, maybe there is something special here. The synergy became natural in that Fortress could aid in infrastructure and start-up while Misfit got the operation engaged. The idea of Fortress supporting a local homebrew superstar like Juan bred another model whereby maybe this won’t be the only time the two groups lock up to open a facility in the Houston area.
How would you describe Misfit Outpost to someone who's never been?
Misfit is an experience. Opening weekend one beer blogger was watching the live music, the kids running around, the craft beers flowing, and overall eclectic vibes and commented, “you’ve brought an Austin atmosphere to the suburbs of Houston.” I actually think that’s a fun way to depict what we hope is the eventual ambiance.
What is it you hope your customers will experience at Misfit?
I hope they feel the fact that local guys wanted to create a place to actually hang out with their own families. This is a place where you’ll see my own daughter running around on Friday afternoon, my wife and her friends listening to music, etc. We want people to feel welcomed. Like everyone belongs. We are all just a little misfit anyways, right?
