Whimsical. Edgy. Modern. Traditional. These are seemingly disparate adjectives that you might not expect to see grouped together when describing a home. And yet they allude to the expertly balanced styles that permeate a distinct, engaging Hilltop project that was recently completed by local Denver luxury home remodel firm Factor Design Build.
“Our clients for this project had a very strong design aesthetic,” says Josh Fiester, co-founder and CEO of Factor Design Build. “They were very hands-on and open to creative ideas throughout the whole process.”
After purchasing the home, the clients turned to Factor Design Build to lead an architectural, construction and interior design overhaul of the structure. Josh notes that, while the original home was well-built, the design was quite dated and the floorplan did not maximize the indoor/outdoor potential of the main living areas.
“In addition to modernizing the home and matching it more to their style, the homeowners really wanted to focus on creating better access to the outdoors so that they could fully enjoy their beautiful lot,” says Josh.
Through both macro layout changes and distinct design details, the Factor Design Build team helped the homeowners achieve these dual goals. The main living, kitchen and dining areas were reimagined into a vast, luminous space ideal for entertaining with natural light spilling in from expansive windows throughout. This sunlight illuminates the modern shaker-style cabinets in the kitchen as well as the space’s standout anchor—a blue marine quartzite kitchen island.
“The clients fell in love with this stone as the centerpiece of the kitchen,” says Robin Bryant, design team lead with Factor Design Build. “The soft backsplash tile and countertops pull from the unique creamy veining in the stone, which also drove some of the blue and chartreuse accent colors used in the furniture by Armijo on the main floor.”
Similarly, unique design choices were purposefully chosen throughout the home. Another example is in the primary office with dark, encompassing blue walls and ceiling, where Josh notes the homeowners were looking to create a warm, traditional sitting or reading room that they could fully sink into.
Contemporary light fixtures with playful details, along with beautiful wallpaper choices, likewise embody the homeowners’ warmly modern, yet brightly edgy style. For instance, the powder room includes origami bird lighting—Perch Light Branch fixtures by Mooi—alongside a delightful John Brooks wallpaper. Up the fully modernized main staircase, the primary suite office is lined with a lovely Walltawk wallpaper while the standout primary bathroom shower is illuminated by perimeter cove lighting, which gives the impression that the space is glowing.
“The lighting was integral to giving each room a polished, yet approachable feel,” says Robin.
In all, Josh notes that all of these elements come together to create a truly distinct, personalized Denver area property.
“The clients really understood how their spaces were going to be used for this remodel, and they chose the perfectly appropriate finishes to match those intents,” Josh says. “Nothing in this house is like what you’d find anywhere else.”
