Sam Webb's only exposure to companion planting strategy was in elementary school when she learned about the Native American practice of the 3 sisters – corn, beans, and squash. She didn’t really pay that much attention to the concept. This is why she was so pleased to find and share Companion Planting for Beginners by Brian Lowell and Plant Partners by Jessica Walliser. Both teach from a science-based perspective so a trial-and-error approach isn't necessary. Companion Planting for Beginners, much as its name says, is a great book for those just starting. It talks about garden planning, soil prep, watering needs, and even how to attract the right bugs with plant groupings. Of particular interest is the last chapter, which is organized by vegetables desired in gardens and which plants to pair with them.
Plant Partners on the other hand is for the more experienced gardener and while there are chapters on topics such as soil preparation, weed management, etc. it’s much for someone who knows the basics. “Living mulch” or "growing sorghum" were not topics Sam had ever really thought about before. The book focuses on vegetable gardens and sometimes offers suggestions on pairings with flowering plants that can make for a gorgeous garden.
No matter where you are on your companion planting journey these 2 books will be of immense help. The store is open 10 am-6 pm Monday through Saturday and 1 pm-5 pm on Sundays.
