The Purple Hippopotamus has become a favorite stop for families in downtown Lee's Summit. More than a children's boutique, it's a place where parents can find thoughtfully chosen products, connect with other families, and feel supported along the way.
Owner Andee Carr created the boutique to offer thoughtfully curated children's clothing, gifts, toys, and resources for parents. From newborn essentials to outfits for children up to age six, the shop is filled with high quality items chosen with both comfort and style in mind.
"We search for unique brands that are high quality and comfortable for kids," Carr said. "It is important to our customers that things feel soft and high quality, so we like to touch and feel items before we buy."
Favorite brands like Lou Lou & Co., Quincy Mae, Angel Dear, and Magnetic Me continue to be customer favorites, while locally loved brands such as Jackie Sue & Co. and Fort Worth-based Hollis Baker offer shoppers something a little different. This season, colorful prints, gingham, nautical themes, fruit patterns, and golf-inspired collections have been especially popular.
The boutique is also a destination for baby shower and birthday gifts, offering everything from books and musical instruments to stuffed animals, Olli Ella dolls, blankets, swaddles, and keepsakes. Gift registry services and baby showers hosted in the store make celebrating growing families even more special.
At the center of the shop is the Hippo Hub, a welcoming space created to support parents beyond retail. Guided by the motto, "Lock Arms, Lean In, and Learn Together," the Hub hosts classes throughout the week in partnership with local businesses, including Womb to Walking, Megan's Yoga Tribe, and Music Together. Families can enjoy movement, music, and early childhood development programs while building meaningful connections with other parents.
Carr says one of the boutique's greatest strengths is its team.
"Many of our staff are grandmothers themselves," she said. "From helping you find the perfect gift to offering a kind word of encouragement on a hard parenting day, they bring a level of warmth and wisdom that only comes from having truly walked the path themselves."
For parents building a child's wardrobe, Carr offers simple advice.
"Buy fewer and higher quality," she suggests. "My other piece of advice is always bring grandma with you!"
As fall approaches, The Purple Hippopotamus is looking forward to introducing the Pink Chicken collection, along with new toddler and balance bikes, just in time for a new season of adventures.
