More Than Furniture

Hustle & Muscle Moving owner Jamal Norman shares the heart and motivation behind the business

How did you get started in the moving industry?

I'm originally from Lincoln County and during high school, I focused a lot on sports. But, I used to help my neighbors, cousins, aunties, and friends when they moved. It was also a way for me to make extra money. After high school, I ended up getting introduced to the moving industry when I rented a U-Haul to pick up a couch I bought through Facebook marketplace. I saw in the U-Haul that they had information for moving help. The guy I was buying the couch from encouraged me to look into starting my own business since I had experience moving people.

What do you love about what you do?

My passion is really helping people. You know, it's a different type of thrill seeing their reaction and those smiles when we get the job done. It makes me feel good. And it’s more than just moving furniture; some people are disabled, military, or elderly and I like getting my hands dirty and helping them. God blesses me every day and with the business, I have a true heart for it and how it helps people.

What makes Hustle & Muscle Moving unique?

We are a small, locally owned business, and because of that our customers are not just a number. I'm in contact with customers every day. Whether it’s a piece of furniture coming from upstairs to downstairs, or a five-bedroom home, I take every job with honor and pride and we will do it as perfectly as we can. I treat people how I want to be treated, and I believe in being professional and courteous.

What services do you offer?

We do local moves, long distance moves, loading and unloading, furniture and equipment assembly, packing services… pretty much whatever a homeowner needs to do to prepare for and complete a move.

Why is it beneficial to hire professional moving company?

You can always find a couple of strong guys to help you out, but that doesn't mean they are not going to tear up your house in the process. Once you sell your home and still have to get your furniture out, you definitely don't want to just hire anybody because they can damage your walls and floors.

It’s also important to have a system in place when it comes to breaking down pieces of furniture like beds and sectionals and keeping the pieces together and organized. Things like televisions need to be prepped and boxed correctly to make it safely to the next destination.

So we come in with floor runners, blankets, door jam protectors, shrink wrap, and we label every single piece so that we know where it goes when it’s time to unload. Hiring a professional brings security that things will be done right and securely. Even though it is furniture, at the same time it is part of your life. It could be your great, great grandmother's piece of furniture that has been passed down for generations.

What are a few tips for people preparing for a move?

First, let us come out to get a detailed idea of the full scope of the move and do an estimate. Every customer and move is different, so we develop a personalized plan. Second, any item over 250 pounds, like a gun safe or treadmill, we need to know about because it has to be handled differently than regular furniture. Third, clean off surfaces, empty furniture of clothes and belongings, and have things ready to go. Furniture needs to be empty because it isn't meant to be transported with extra weight. All those things go a long way in helping a move go smoothly.
