Avanti Medical Center is about more than just aesthetics. Kellie Lewis, FNP, has been doing hormone therapy for 23 years, and has helped people from across Utah and all over the United States improve their marriages and feel better mentally and physically since she opened Avanti. She discovered a passion for hormone therapy because of the difference it makes in people’s lives. She felt that when she would treat pneumonia or strep throat, she’d help someone through the worst ten days of their month. But with hormone therapy, she helps them through the toughest times of their lives. Kellie’s motivations lie in helping her patients feel seen, heard and healthy. “When they walk in the door, I usually let them know, look, I’ve been through this too.” She seeks to provide hope to those who have been ignored, steamrolled, and told that they’re ‘fine’ when they know something isn’t right with their bodies.
Many people don’t realize that their hormones are unbalanced, even if they feel the effects. It’s not typically treated by standard doctor’s offices, due to botched studies in the 2000s about women’s health and hormones. “I go over their labs and say, ‘this is why you're this way.’ Once you have data, they're just like, thank goodness it wasn't me. I was afraid you were going to tell me my labs were normal. Like I've heard from everyone else.” When hormone imbalances do get treated, they aren’t always treated with natural hormones that bodies accept as the same as their naturally produced hormones, like Avanti uses. This leads people to assume that their hormone imbalance isn’t what caused their issues, and hormone therapy won’t help them. “It's like if you move to America and you've never had a hamburger and you get a bad one, you think you don't like hamburgers. You think a hamburger didn't work for you. So I'm grateful when I get someone who will give it another shot.” Kellie focuses on treating the root of the problem through individualized treatment plans instead of offering supplements. “That's not fixing the problem, that's throwing something at it. If you have chronic migraines, you could take Tylenol every day, or you could try and get to the bottom of the migraine.”
Women have an especially hard time getting treatment for hormone imbalances, and often end up suffering in silence. As women age, they produce less estrogen, which, among other things, causes disrupted sleep. “She becomes more irritable, and it just spirals. Everything starts going wrong.” Many women are left floundering with hormonal shifts through peri-menopause and menopause when they’re told that how they’re feeling is normal. They struggle to figure out how to feel better mentally and physically, often not realizing that feeling better is an option. Kellie believes that women should feel mentally and physically well throughout their entire lives, but women are constantly told that the time to feel like themselves is still on its way. “There’s never a time in a woman’s life where we hear you should feel good.” In school, they’re told that they’re stressed trying to create their life, and once they graduate they’ll be okay. Then they’re told they’re trying to find a spouse, and after they’re married they’ll feel better. Then they’re trying to have kids, but being a mom is hard and it’s a lot of responsibility, so wait until the kids grow up. Then they need to find their purpose after the kids are grown. Then they’re getting older, and it’s time for a retirement home, so of course they’re not going to feel very healthy. There never seems to be a time for women to feel balanced and healthy. But at Avanti, they get the care they need. “A woman knows when she comes here, she’s safe.”
But hormone therapy isn’t just for women. The benefits of estrogen and testosterone hormone therapy for both men and women include anti-aging, disease prevention, mood regulation and improved bone health, gut health and heart function. Hormone imbalances can lead to inability to put on muscle, weight gain, compromised immune system, decreased libido, poor bladder function, headaches, weak bones, heart and gut issues, insomnia, chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety and much more. Most patients at Avanti begin treatment at the testosterone and estrogen levels of 90 year olds, a small percentage of the healthy range for younger adults. “Doctors give you every other hormone you’re low on, but suddenly, these are the ones you don’t really need. We replenish everything else in life.”
Beyond hormone therapy, Avanti seeks to produce overall wellness by offering a variety of injectable services, sexual wellness treatments, non-invasive treatments including facials; CoolSculptingⓇ; RF skin tightening and chemical peels, minimally invasive treatments including platelet-rich plasma therapy for hair regrowth and tissue regeneration and repair; melasma treatment and microneedling, and laser treatments including cellulite reduction; hyperpigmentation toning; acne treatment; hair removal; scar minimizing; skin resurfacing and tightening; and their newest laser treatment, Moxi anti-aging skincare.
