Beyond What You Wear

How one boutique transformed fashion into confidence, connection and meaningful community experiences.

Fashion trends come and go, but true style is far more personal than what appears on a runway or fills a social media feed. It's found in the pieces people reach for time and again, the colors that inspire confidence and the outfits that feel unmistakably like themselves. For Elizabeth Vinhal, style begins long before getting dressed. It starts with authenticity, confidence and understanding who you are today—not who you were years ago or who someone else thinks you should be.

Those beliefs have guided every chapter of Vinhal's career. After spending more than 20 years as a successful family law attorney, she made an unexpected pivot into fashion, opening Camden Road, a women's boutique in Basking Ridge, with one simple goal: helping women feel good about themselves.

"I wanted the next phase of my life to be about making people feel good," Vinhal says. "When you're a divorce lawyer, even if you've done the best possible job, nobody is ever truly happy. I wanted to spend my days creating something that brought people joy."

For Vinhal, clothing has always been about much more than fabric, labels, or trends. The right outfit can instill confidence before an important meeting, offer comfort during a difficult season, or make an ordinary Tuesday feel a little brighter. While fashion constantly evolves, the emotional connection people have with what they wear remains timeless.

Through Camden Road, Vinhal has built a loyal following by creating a welcoming shopping experience centered on conversation, relationships, and genuine style advice. Rather than telling customers what they should wear, she encourages them to discover what already feels authentic.

Every woman walks in with a different story. Some know exactly what they're looking for, while others are navigating career changes, motherhood, retirement, or simply trying to rediscover their personal style. Vinhal believes those life transitions often deserve a wardrobe that evolves alongside them.

"Style isn't about becoming someone else," she says. "It's about becoming the best version of yourself."

That philosophy begins with listening. Before recommending a single piece, Vinhal prefers to understand a woman's lifestyle. Does she work from home? Travel often? Attend school events every weekend? Want to feel polished without spending an hour getting dressed each morning?

The answers shape every recommendation.

Rather than building a wardrobe around fleeting trends, Vinhal encourages women to invest in versatile pieces that can be styled multiple ways. A structured blazer instantly elevates denim, while a classic white button-down works just as effortlessly with tailored trousers as it does layered over a dress. Quality denim, well-fitting jackets, timeless handbags, and comfortable shoes create a wardrobe foundation that never loses its appeal.

She also believes accessories are often underestimated. A statement necklace, textured handbag, bold earrings, or colorful scarf can completely transform a familiar outfit without requiring an entirely new wardrobe.

"Fashion can either match your mood or change your mood," Vinhal says. "If you're not feeling your best, putting on something you love can completely change how you walk through the day."

As fall approaches, she's especially excited about the return of rich burgundies, chocolate browns, olive greens, and warm neutral tones. Soft suede, textured knits, elevated denim, structured jackets, and polished loafers are replacing summer's lighter fabrics and beach-inspired palettes. The season also embraces thoughtful details—from subtle embellishments to oversized handbags—that add personality without sacrificing versatility.

Perhaps the biggest trend, however, isn't a color or silhouette at all.

Vinhal also encourages women to pay attention to the pieces they repeatedly reach for. Those favorites often reveal the foundation of a person's signature style. Instead of constantly reinventing a wardrobe, she suggests identifying the silhouettes, colors, and fabrics that consistently feel comfortable and confident. Building around those trusted pieces creates a closet that feels cohesive, intentional, and far less overwhelming than chasing every new trend that appears each season.

Today's fashion embraces individuality.

Rather than dressing for Instagram or chasing every viral trend, more women are building wardrobes around their actual lives. They want clothing that moves seamlessly from work meetings to dinner with friends, from school pickup to weekend getaways. Comfort remains important, but so does feeling polished and put together.

Vinhal encourages women to periodically edit their closets with honesty.

If something no longer fits, no longer reflects who you are, or simply doesn't make you feel confident, it may be time to let it go. Holding onto clothes for a version of yourself that no longer exists often creates unnecessary frustration every morning.

"Be your present self," she says. "When you open your closet, everything in it should make you feel good."

It's advice she shares with her daughter as well. One of her favorite reminders is both simple and powerful: "The word beautiful has the word 'you' in it."

That message perfectly captures Vinhal's approach to style.

Fashion should never feel intimidating or exclusive. It should be approachable, enjoyable, and deeply personal. The goal isn't owning the most expensive handbag or wearing every new trend the moment it appears. It's building a wardrobe that reflects your personality, supports your lifestyle, and gives you confidence every time you get dressed.

Trends will continue to evolve. Colors will change. Hemlines will rise and fall, and each season will introduce something new. But Vinhal believes the foundation of great style never changes. It begins with knowing yourself, dressing for the life you're living today, and choosing pieces that make you feel like your most authentic self.

Because while fashion may capture someone's attention, confidence always leaves the lasting impression—and that's a trend that never goes out of style.
