More WiFi speed? Yes please!

There's a next generation of tech solutions for home audio and video

Have you heard of WiFi6? Do you need more speed for your devices at home? Kurt Pendleton, Mako Davis and Mike Smart are the owners of Tech Savvy, each with over 25 years of experience in this field, and have answers.

1. Tell us about WiFi6, the next generation! What does it mean to users?

It will still do the same basic thing as everyone is familiar with. It will connect you to the internet, but just with a bunch of additional technologies to make that happen more efficiently, while speeding up connections in the process.

The speed is 9.6 Gbps as compared to 3.5 Gbps on Wi-Fi 5ghz  Both of those speeds are theoretical maximums that you’re unlikely to ever reach in real-world Wi-Fi use. The typical download speed in the US is just 72 Mbps (25Mbps for streaming a 4k movie on Netflix), or less than 1 percent of the theoretical maximum speed.

The fact that Wi-Fi 6 has a much higher theoretical speed limit than its predecessor is still important. That 9.6 Gbps doesn’t have to go to a single computer. It can be split up across a whole network of devices. That means more potential speed for each device.

Instead of boosting the speed for individual devices, Wi-Fi 6 is all about improving the network when a bunch of devices are connected to it.

That’s an important goal, and it arrives at an important time: when Wi-Fi 5 came out, the average US household had about 4-6 devices on it.  Now, homes have about 9-20 devices on average, and the industry has predicted we’ll hit 50 on average within several years.

Those added devices take a toll on your network. Your router can only communicate with so many devices at once, so the more gadgets demanding Wi-Fi, the more the network overall is going to slow down.

2. What other systems, tools, toys or services are you excited about for 2022?

A new keypad called Orro has been released that will incorporate an automation system, replace a decora dimmer, add motion detection, control your volume in that room and bring back the intercom concept. This keypad is great for existing or new construction homes or businesses. It can be installed where a dimmer or switch already exists and hooks up to the same wires that the switch used. This is great for a home where it's difficult to reach everybody vocally and need to distribute communication.

3. Your employees are your secret sauce.

Our employees are amazing. Not one weak link. They are constantly acknowledged having excellent respect for the homes they visit, amazing educational skills, and friendly/knowledgeable service.
