Did you know takes an average 50 licks to finish a single scoop of ice cream? That's just one of the facts written on the wall of the Museum of Ice Cream that opened at The Domain late August.
After successful pop-ups in New York in 2016 (that’s since also become permanent) followed by Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami and recently Singapore, the Museum of Ice Cream landed in Austin for a limited run and has since announced it will stay open until at least the end of the year, if not forever.
And while it took five years from the museum’s inception for Austin to get a location, co-founder and creative directly Maryellis Bunn says the idea for the museum originated here. “We started the journey of the Museum of Ice Cream in Austin as an idea at SXSW in 2016,” she says. “We knew that the combination of Austin’s love of amazing food, experiences, art and, most importantly, its inclusiveness and welcoming culture would make the city a wonderful home for MOIC. We could not be more thrilled to continue our mission to spready joy and connection through the universal power of ice cream in Austin.”
We strategically limited photos from inside to keep an element of surprise, but can tell you that once you enter you’re transported to a Candyland of sorts, beginning with a 1960s dinner, complete with servers on roller skates your choice of soft serve ice cream. As you traverse your way through rooms full of made-for-social media moments, from the rainbow hallway to an interactive game room and the requisite swimming pool full of (plastic) sprinkles, you’ll be greeted with the option to indulge in ice cream, candy and in the bar at the end, a spiked cocktail (including the most outrageous frozen rose we’ve ever seen) if you’re doing the Night at the Museum option, and you’re over 21.
Not to be missed is Amy’s Ice Cream’s made-for-the-museum flavor Congress Parade- frosted animal crackers and rainbow sprinkles mixed into a vanilla cake batter ice cream base! A scoop of heaven in a cup.
