Originally from Colombia, singer-songwriter and producer Nico Martinez has taken the local music scene by storm. His music career started as a guitar duo, consisting of Nico and his father, Luis Eduardo Martinez, Colombian architect and music aficionado, whom he considers the most influential person in jumpstarting his musical career.

Playing together at a local Colombian restaurant, Nico grew to perform solo shows at local bars, restaurants, hotels and more. For the past 5 years, he and his band have focused on bringing a new, upbeat and fresh take on Latin Fusion music to Denver. Playing at our Boulder Lifestyle event at Corrida on June 1st, I was lucky enough to get to know him a bit more.

Tell us about your band and what type of music you perform.

Our band is a local, bilingual three-piece trio composed of a bassist and percussionist (Congas, Cajon and electronic beat pad) along with an acoustic guitar and lead vocals. We perform Latin Fusion sets that are tailored for both old and young crowds mixing genres, such as Reggeaton, Jazz, Funk, Caribbean, Pop, Spanish Rock, R&B, Flamenco, Dance and American Classics.

What are your performances like?

We strive to create very unique, energetic and upbeat music experiences to keep people grooving and provide a good dynamic of slow to medium tempo songs. The fusion of sounds we perform, all with live instrumentation and vocals, is unique to our band and our playing style. We perform songs both in English and Spanish to expand our audience reach and relate to people of all cultural backgrounds!

What sort of events have you played?

In the past, we have been booked for events at the Botanic Gardens, played at a variety of high-end local restaurants and hotels (Toro, My Neighbor Felix, The Maven, Dairy Block, The Clayton, Stanley Marketplace), performed for Latin-inspired breweries (Raices, Cheluna) and small music festivals as well as private organization events in the Boulder, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs area.

More importantly, our crew of musicians, who share a diverse background of Colombian, Mexican and Cuban, have over 20 years of combined live music experience, mixing and setting up sound for the gigs. Our main priority is putting on a stellar performance while making sure that the client and the venue are represented through us!

What are your goals of being a prominent member of the Denver music scene?

My mission is to infuse the Denver community with love and creative sound, dissolve cultural barriers and forge magical moments while striving to be an inspiration to others. I envision myself as a multicultural leader and artist, and hope to influence the Denver community to feel connected, inspired and enriched by the diverse atmosphere that music can create!
