Music + Healthcare = Perfect Harmony

Perfect Harmony Health began as a dream in 2010, founded as The George Center for Music Therapy (GCMT) to address the financial burden placed on families of individuals with needs. In 2020, after ten years of operating as one of the most successful private practices in the southeast, the GCMT transitioned to operate only as a nonprofit, Perfect Harmony Health (PHH).

Perfect Harmony Health has three fundamental principles:

  • We believe we have a unique, necessary, and innovative form of therapy that should be accessible to anyone who seeks the service.
  • We believe in our clients, in their abilities, and not putting a ceiling on their potential, but rather providing them with foundations for future success.
  • We believe we can change the lives of our clients and their families and have programs that improve the transfer of skills from individual therapy to everyday life.

Executive Director Hannah Rinehart explains, “We believe that just because healthcare is innovative does not mean that it should be a luxury. Our team specializes in treating the whole person in harmony by connecting the brain, composing the mind, and synchronizing the body by providing therapy, resources, and community access”.

Perfect Harmony Health focuses on three aspects:

Connect the Brain -- When it comes to neurologic injuries and diseases, the types and variations are as diverse as the people experiencing them. Historically, the focus is on expectation. At PHH, the focus is on building neurologic foundations for future success using Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT)® techniques to work around areas of the brain that are dark or disconnected. And, with NMT®, you can restore blocked speech, break behavioral loops, strengthen and pave new neural pathways in damaged brain areas, and free trapped memories and reinforce new ones.

Compose the Mind – Your state of mind is the baseline for cognition. Everything builds on this emotional baseline, like social skills and physical skills. At the peak of the pyramid is executive function. You must be in a good headspace before you can think clearly. It starts in individual sessions, and it culminates in group programs where you get to relate to others. This kind of work is powerful in a group setting because music speaks where words fail with the ability to build friendships across generations, dissolve feelings of loneliness and isolation, improve mood and self-esteem, improve emotional processing and regulation, and improve social skills.

Synchronize the Body -- Your sense of self-worth is tied to your ability to do everyday tasks independently. Many adults are actively fighting a decline. Imagine how demoralizing it can be when people assume your physical limitations mean you have low intelligence.

PHH focuses on synchronizing the body by cueing rhythmic movement with Neurologic Music Therapy techniques to help people manage their daily tasks by improving motor functioning and motor skills as well as regulating the sensory system through instrumental exercises.

“We have made education, innovation, and research a cornerstone of who we are and we are proud to be the only practice in the Southeast that is 100% composed of neurologic music therapists, many of whom are also fellows. Our story is ever-changing, focused on the future, and treating the whole person in harmony,” says Hannah.
