As a commentator, writer, interior designer and entrepreneur, Patricia Taft carries forward the legacy of her family name with a distinctly modern voice. The great-granddaughter of President William Howard Taft and granddaughter of Senator Robert A. Taft, she has carved out her own space at the intersection of politics, culture and contemporary life, serving on the Membership Nominating Committee for the National Women’s Suffrage Monument and on the boards of both the National First Ladies Day initiative and the Society of Presidential Descendants. These experiences serve as the inspiration for her latest endeavor, The Political Nepo Baby Podcast, which launched last month. “I knew I had a voice and unique perspective," Taft says. "The podcast explores politics and culture through the lens of a biracial millennial mom—hopefully with humor and curiosity.” Living in the Santa Monica flats with her husband, two daughters and their French bulldog, Taft finds joy in the community’s balance of beauty, drive and groundedness—as well as what she calls the “quintessential childhood of beaches, parks, scooters and dance classes.” Here, a few of Taft's favorite local spots.
“As a mom of two young daughters, Sophie Dance has become my home away from home—filled with tiny ballerinas tapping around in tutus. Owners Sophie, Breaelin and Kat have created a joy-filled space where arabesques and pliés are rooted in fun and friendship. I savor watching through the window while catching up with friends.” 13050 San Vicente Blvd., Suite 201; 323-219-5930; sophiedancewestside.com
“Clad in neutral coffered ceilings and soothing creams, The Bar Method Brentwood embodies the quiet-luxury version of an effective workout. With a wide range of class times and a stellar roster of instructors, this studio makes it easy to stay consistent, centered, and strong.” 13050 San Vicente Blvd.; 818-524-8671; barmethod.com
“As a self-proclaimed pointelle-and-gingham addict, Dôen is my one-stop shop for all things chic, curated and quintessentially California. It’s my fairy godmother for last-minute mother-daughter looks, with extra points for the vintage toy trunk that keeps little ones entertained while mom shops.” 225 26th St., Suite 4; 877-756-7353; shopdoen.com
“Poppy Store is where tulle meets prep at an intersection with Bonpoint—my favorite for baby-shower gifts, tween birthdays or seasonal must-haves like swimwear, goggles and Moncler vests.” 225 26th St., Suite 30A; 310-260-4777; poppystores.com
“I do not always say yes to a toy—but always to a book—and Zibby’s Bookshop makes that yes feel special every time. With its East Coast charm and knowledgeable, welcoming staff, it’s a neighborhood gem that transforms simple strolls into home library expansions.” 1113 Montana Ave., Santa Monica; 424-387-1744; zibbymedia.com
“If it’s Friday, I’m likely at Parakeet Café hunting for lemon cucumber chips before they sell out. Between smoothies, teas and baked goods, it’s my go-to for clean indulgence—proof that even small vices can be enjoyed in the healthiest of ways.” 13050 San Vicente Blvd., Suite 112; 310-746-5828; parakeetcafe.com
“While most go to Great White for brunch, I swear by it for date night or dinner with friends. The airy space, light California fare and effortless vibe strike the perfect balance of cozy and cool. My must-orders: the salmon pizza, tuna tostada, and steak frites.” 11660 Darlington Ave.; 424-325-6644; greatwhite.cafe
