National Youth Theater (NYT) is a performing arts organization serving the youth of the North Houston area. It recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary. When the program began in 2014, it only had one camp for a handful of students. Since then, it has evolved into a Christian nonprofit organization with 10 camps, 9 productions, and NYT Studio classes that serve hundreds of young artists each year.
NYT is far more than just the incredible performances you witness on stage; it is a vibrant community dedicated to fostering character development and cultivating leaders. Within this space, participants engage in valuable experiences that promote personal growth and integrity. At the heart of NYT is a commitment to placing Jesus at the center of everything they do, guiding their values and actions. This unique blend of artistry, faith, and community engagement helps individuals not only to showcase their talents but also to grow spiritually and emotionally, creating lasting bonds with one another.
"NYT plays a vital role in both the community and the lives of young people by creating a supportive environment that encourages personal and social growth," says Justin Parks, Executive and Artistic Director of NYT. "Through participation in the performing arts, these programs offer young individuals meaningful opportunities to explore their creativity, build confidence, cultivate leadership skills, explore their spiritual growth, and develop essential life skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, which are important for both ministry and everyday life."
Jessica Kotrla, Education Director of the theater, agrees that NYT provides a friendly space that welcomes youth from all backgrounds, giving them the chance to experience musical theater, dance, and ministry. "In 2024, we had a total of 731 cast members involved in our shows, 621 campers attending our summer camps, and 214 students participating in our studio classes," said Kotrla. "We embrace a diverse group of young people, including those from homeschool programs, public and private schools, as well as children with autism and learning disabilities. We understand the challenges they face and strive to provide a supportive environment where every child can thrive."
The youth theater organization also partners with local schools, community organizations, and families to strengthen community ties. "Every now and then, we happily donate set pieces and props to school theater departments and provide costumes for church productions. Throughout the year, we organize fun spirit nights at local businesses, bringing everyone together to enjoy good times and support our local spots. We also donate summer camp registrations for schools and non-profit organizations to auction off. The amazing families who collaborate with us on productions, along with all the wonderful attendees who come out to support these events, are such a blessing. We’re truly grateful to be part of this vibrant community," said Chris Hendrix, Director of Production.
NYT understands that not every family can afford tuition, which is why it offers a scholarship program to ensure that all children have the opportunity to participate in its programs. "Last year, we were able to provide over $13,000 in financial assistance to families facing difficult circumstances. Every child, regardless of their background, deserves the chance to experience the magic of an NYT program," said Emily Currid, the Business Director.
Investing in youth theater translates into brighter futures for young people. It equips them with the confidence to pursue their passions and the skills necessary to overcome challenges, thus creating a well-rounded, resilient generation that can contribute positively to society. In this way, NYT transcends mere entertainment; it establishes a foundation for nurturing engaged, informed, and compassionate community members.
Here’s an inspiring quote from a family involved with NYT that highlights the organization's profound impact on the community and its youth: "NYT is more than just a theater. They are a family, a ministry, and a group that shows youth the true meaning of glorifying God through their gifts and talents. This is a group whose ministry is bringing glory and honor to God, with some pretty fabulous song and dance on top."
Consider investing in your children's future by encouraging them to participate in musical theater. Enroll them in a local theater program, classes, or camp to help them embark on an enriching journey that can shape their lives in countless positive ways.
We invite you to join NYT productions this spring, featuring performances of Matilda, Aladdin Jr., and Shrek: The Musical. Registration is now open for summer camps for ages 6 to 19. Additionally, there are summer show opportunities with The Prince of Egypt, Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr., and Fiddler on the Roof.
