Raising Your Spirits

Good Spirits Liquor and Wine Reopens With a Colorado-Style Makeover

Mixed drinks or craft cocktails. Neat, shaken, stirred or floated. In a chilled beer mug or a fluted stem. However you like your drink, Good Spirits has you in mind.

Longtime Highland Ranch residents Nikki and Tom Dempsey moved here from out of state, and intended to stay for just a few years. But like many transplants, fell in love with the state, then each other and have lived in Highlands Ranch for more than 20 years. The community liquor store they patronized and had become friendly with the staff was at times out of the products they liked to buy, so when they learned the longtime owners were selling, they decided to take the leap into something new. The Covid-19 pandemic slowed the process of purchasing the shop, but they knew that the location of the shop was very promising, and wanted to provide an inviting, friendly, and well-stocked neighborhood liquor store. The name “Good Spirits” stands for what they want to create, “when you’re in here, you’re in Good Spirits."

The first thing they did was work with professional designers to completely redesign the interior. Colorado’s own thriving brewing and spirits industry, along side mountain architecture served as inspiration. Like Coloradans, the interior is warm and welcoming, with a rustic but modern charm. At the advise of their contractor, Fountain Gate Property Service, Colorado Beetle Kill Pine is featured predominantly, both for the aesthetic, but also the scent. In addition to a professionally designed interior, Good Spirits hired graphic designer Matt Dowling to create their vintage styled logo. The checkout counter was moved to the front of the store so that customers are greeted as the enter.

“Everyday someone walks in with a confused look on their face and asks if they are in the right store,” Tom says, describing the change in interior. “We have to reorient them as to where everything is located.  We have so many customers who compliment us on the friendly staff, remodeled store, and incredible selection.”

Even though they both were in medical devise sales for many years, they’d never worked together.

Nikki says “I love working with Tom. Everyday I am amazed by his creativity and his incredible work ethic.”

Tom agrees, saying “we learned how to divide and conquer key tasks. The important part is to recognize each other’s strengths and trust in one another. We have found that it has actually been rewarding for our relationship.”

Since opening, Good Spirits has tripled their inventory, offering a wide range of standard and unique wine, beer, spirits, cordials, liqueurs and mixers. Both big and small Colorado brewers are robustly represented here with 440 options. The whiskey section is particularly impressive. Well-known brands, such as Stranahans, sit along side smaller Colorado distillers Laws, Leopold, Elkins, and 10th Mountain. In the back of the store is a tasting area, which will open once COVID restrictions lift. Customers can join their free whiskey club to hear first about special discounts and rare allocated bourbons.
