Nature Meets Neighborhood

More Than a Path Through the Woods, Northshore Trail Connects Neighbors, Fosters Health, and Encourages Locals to Thrive Outdoors

Woven between the tree line and the scenic shores of Lake Grapevine, Northshore Trail stands as one of North Texas’s most beloved outdoor escapes. For Flower Mound residents, it’s practically in their backyard. Just steps away from the vibrant mixed-use community of Lakeside Village, the trail offers an unparalleled blend of convenience, natural beauty, and adventure in the heart of Dallas–Fort Worth.

Stretching roughly 22 miles round trip between Rockledge Park in Grapevine and Twin Coves Park in Flower Mound, Northshore Trail is celebrated for its versatility. Hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers alike share its winding dirt paths, shaded forest sections, and beautiful lake lookouts. The trail’s mix of elevations allows enjoyers to choose their own adventure, making it equally ideal for both a weekend workout and a peaceful morning walk.

Originally carved out in the 1990s through a partnership between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and local volunteers, the trail has grown into a community cornerstone. People come from across the Metroplex to burn calories and build friendships.

Drew Flowers, manager of Trailhead Running Supply Co. in The Shops at Lakeside Village, knows this to be true. When discussing the idea to open a trail-focused run specialty shop with his partner (and Lakeside Village resident) Darren Beck in 2020, he knew he needed to be close to a great trail, and Northshore proved a natural choice.

“It is truly one of the best trails in DFW,” said Drew. “The moment you step onto Northshore, it feels like you’ve escaped the city by hours.”

Many of the local businesses in Lakeside Village, including Cadence Cyclery and Trailhead Running Supply Co., curate activities catering to the visitors who come to the trails each week. For his part, Drew and his team host Sunday runs, affectionately called Dirt Church, where 30 to 40 people come out to run or hike together.

For many in Flower Mound, the trail represents something rare in today’s fast-paced world: an opportunity to stop, unplug, and connect to nature. Whether it’s checking in with yourself on a sunrise jog or boosting your metabolism with meaningful friends, Northshore Trail provides a chance to explore the possibilities.
