New Year Fashion Audit

Tips For Optimizing Your Wardrobe

It’s a new year, and we’re all feeling refreshed! The cold winter months are the perfect time to audit wardrobes, combing through what’s in, what’s out, and evaluating what to keep. This can be a tough task, and requires honesty as well as creativity. Following are tips and tricks for a new year closet overhaul. I’m all about simplicity, minimalism and efficiency when it comes to my wardrobe, but make sure you are true to yourself when you’re conducting your own purge. Keep what you really love!

PUT YOUR CLOTHES TO THE TEST

Not sure if you should keep a piece or not? Put it through a test! Flip all of your hangers backward on your rack, and when a piece is worn, flip the hanger forward. In a few months, it’s time to get rid of the clothes on your backwards hangers -- you honestly know you don't wear them.

SELL WHAT HAS WORTH

Feeling guilty for buying a high dollar piece that you never wore? Maybe it even still has tags attached. Download the Poshmark app, or try selling the piece on Facebook Marketplace or within your own circle of friends through Instagram or Facebook. It will get more use in a new home, and you’ll get some money back for it -- win, win!

BUY NICE OR BUY TWICE

I'm all about quality. When it comes to fashion, I keep my event-specific or one-time-wear pieces to a minimum. Investing in high-quality, sustainable and long-lasting pieces is good for the environment and makes your audits even easier.

STOW AWAY NOSTALGIC PIECES

Concert tees, sweaters that were gifted to us, a treasured clutch bought on vacation…we all have these pieces that we just can’t seem to part with. Pack these items up with other keepsake items and store them away from your everyday clothing. This way, they’re in safe keeping without cluttering your closet.

KEEP IT

"There are a few trends that will be stick around, so as you clean out your closet make sure you hang onto them! Oversized blazers are so chic and pair well with dresses, dress pants or tossed on over your favorite hoodie and jeans. Keep your sequins, too. These tops, pants or dresses are sure to be in style well into 2022.” - Abby Timm, local fashion influencer (@homewiththetimms)

BRING IT BACK

“Vintage will always be on trend. All you need is one killer vintage piece to elevate your look and set you apart. My vintage closet staples are an oversized vintage blazer and Levi’s.” -Mary Powers, local vintage shop owner (@missmarypowers)
