Most people approach the doctor's office with trepidation and nervousness. After all, white-coat hypertension is real. About 1 in 5 people experience higher blood pressure in a medical setting than at home, work, or just walking down the street. Being in a healthcare setting can trigger a person's "fight-or-flight" response.
"Walking into our new office has a completely different feel than any place I have practiced in the past," says Oleta Schranz, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, owner of Preston Family Healthcare. At the beginning of the year, Oleta and her team, alongside Dr. Shane Brown with Celina Total Foot Care, moved to their new offices at 209 South Preston Road. The office is situated in the new Doe Branch Office Park, just south of Pecan Street on Preston Road and minutes from downtown Celina. It was developed by Doe Branch Partners, with phase one breaking ground in December 2022. They are excited to share it with their friends and patients. Oleta shares, "I have practiced in Celina since 2018 but never in my own space that I could design and plan the patient experience."
A new practice office does not just happen; this has been a three-year journey for Oleta and her design and build team. Sometimes, it has been an actual labor of love, and other times, it has been the biggest challenge of her life. She has worked tirelessly with Ben Hangartner, CEO of HBA Design and Build, a full-service construction services firm local to Celina, Donny Knightstep of K4 General Construction & Roofing, who acted as the General Contractor, and Kim Roulet, a great friend and owner of A Redesigned Life. This dream team worked hard, encouraged, and helped Oleta's dreams across the finish line. Oleta shares, "I was unprepared for how many choices need to be made in the building process. I would get so overwhelmed that I came to the point where I asked my team to just ‘bring me three choices.'"
Finally, bringing her vision to life, Oleta wanted to offer her patients an environment that reflected the country environment residents of Celina value, and a comfortable, homey feeling everyone could relate to. Walking into the lobby, you are greeted by a clean, uncluttered environment of blues, grays, and warm tones making it accessible. The extensive millwork and wainscoting lend to the feeling of cozy sophistication. After sharing offices with other practices for years, Oleta explains, "It feels like my own space - like I have been living with my parents, and I finally moved out."
The new offices are about 2,500 square feet, an increase of 1,000 square feet from her previous offices. The move has allowed them to have eight exam rooms, a dedicated lab space, and an open, comfortable waiting room. Since opening in 2018, Oleta and her team have focused on managing and preventing Type 2 diabetes as well as several chronic conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and heart disease. However, as a small-town provider, her practice has migrated to examining a person's and family's whole health, genetic factors, and behavioral health.
With the expanded office space, the team at Preston Family Healthcare will be able to accommodate more patients and add additional staff to focus on primary care, preventative care, and weight management. The team's focus has always been on preventative health. Still, they are excited to offer clinic space to visiting specialists who would not usually be able to come into the community until the medical centers and services are more developed. The advantage of having a blood draw and EKG done locally instead of driving to Frisco is a pure benefit to the community. Still, local access to a cardiologist, orthopedic specialist, or pulmonologist benefits all Celina residents. While still working out the details, the upcoming months and years of partnerships should prove exciting to the community. You should follow Preston Family Healthcare on social media to stay updated on changes in additional clinic hours and visiting clinicians.
One unexpected opportunity resulting from the new space has been the ability to partner with the expanded Health Sciences Education program at Collin College and the Celina Independent School District. She provides students in high school the chance to shadow the team and gain experience through the Patient Care Technician (PCT) program. Additionally, she promotes expanded educational opportunities for Collin College students entering the nursing field and established LVNs and RNs seeking further training.
After seven years of practice in the Celina community, Oleta has seen hundreds of ways it cares for its citizens. From care for seniors to disaster response, reduced-price student physicals, well-child checks and vaccine clinics, and hosting local blood drives, Celina citizens always show up in significant and small ways. As a community medical provider, Oleta said, "I love that I get to be part of that." Preston Family Healthcare continues to be a drop location for Helping Hands of Celina and is active in the Celina Chamber of Commerce to help many local families in need.
Suppose you are looking for the easter egg. In that case, you should check out the remarkable mural in the reception area, where Oleta wanted to pay homage to the history of farming and ranching in the Celina area.
