Johns Creek has long been known for its commitment to excellence, whether in education, business, or quality of life. In 2023, Johns Creek solidified its commitment to a more sustainable future by achieving the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Green Community Bronze Certification. Through a range of green initiatives under the certification program, Johns Creek is investing in sustainability programs, education and infrastructure that will benefit residents today while ensuring future generations inherit a thriving, healthy community.
Community Engagement and Education
Johns Creek recognizes that sustainability is a collective effort. The city has implemented educational programs and initiatives to engage residents in sustainable practices through social media and the city website, including the Sustainability Center, which houses resources for residents wanting to learn more about the city’s efforts and how they can get involved. Johns Creek also works in partnership with key local organizations like Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center (AMNP). The team at AMNP provide robust and comprehensive education programming both at the Heritage Center and through outreach visits to local K-12 schools and community events, covering topics including wildlife and habitat conservation, water quality and history.
Waste Reduction and Recycling Initiatives
Proper waste management is another pillar of Johns Creek’s sustainability efforts. All city parks and facilities and City events are equipped with recycling receptacles, so residents can recycle no matter where they are. The city has also implemented robust recycling programs both through City-led efforts, like the glass recycling program, and through Keep North Fulton Beautiful (KNFB). KNFB hosts several specialized recycling events each year including a Household Hazardous Waste event, a Bulky Recycling event, and a Christmas tree recycling event. These events make it easier for residents to responsibly dispose of non-traditional recyclables, like electronics, batteries, paint, and more. The full lists can be found on the KNFB website, and all residents can take part at generally no cost.
Stormwater Management and Green Infrastructure
Water is a precious resource, and Johns Creek is taking steps to ensure its conservation.
To address stormwater management, Johns Creek is enhancing its infrastructure to prevent flooding, reduce runoff pollution, and protect the Chattahoochee River and its tributaries. Smaller green infrastructure solutions, such as permeable pavements and rain gardens, help absorb excess rainwater while filtering out pollutants before they enter the water system. Residents can check out the rain garden at Morton Road Park to learn more.
Larger investments, like the new park behind city hall, incorporate stormwater upgrades and a constructed wetland area as part of its development, which will serve as retention for all present and future development in the Town Center area. This investment reduces future construction burdens on private development and will provide much needed wetland habitat for local wildlife. The park is set to open in 2026.
The Importance of Sustainability
Sustainability is more than just a buzzword — it is a necessary consideration for creating resilient communities. By integrating environmentally conscious efforts, the city is working to do its part in creating a cleaner, greener future. Green initiatives not only help preserve the natural environment, but they also contribute to the overall quality of life for residents.
Johns Creek encourages residents to take advantage of the programs offered by the city and its partners to become educated and take part in the effort. By working together, residents and city leaders can ensure that Johns Creek remains a vibrant, sustainable place to live for years to come.
