Oaks Christian Launches Two New Institutes

Oaks Christian School celebrates its 25th anniversary this academic year, but the leader in educational innovation is not resting on its laurels. The past 2-plus decades have seen the college-preparatory school excel in academic, artistic and athletic endeavors, as well as opening a domestic and international boarding program, and the future trajectory is not slowing down.

This fall Oaks Christian is opening two new institutes, adding to the three it has already launched: engineering, arts and innovation and global leadership.

As students return to school this fall, the Institute of Health Sciences and the Institute of Bible and Discipleship will be two new options for high school students.

“We are excited these two new institutes will offer unique pathways giving our students a jumpstart on cultivating their passions and interest,” said Associate Head of School Dr. Matt Northrop. “Both of these institutes are oriented toward a mindset of service, be it through vocational ministry or the medical and health science fields.”

As with the other institutes, students will interact with industry professionals, enjoy master classes taught by experts, have internship and shadowing opportunities, and present a senior capstone project.

Headed by OCS Director of Medical Services Dr. Bryan Wong, the Institute of Health Sciences will give students with an interest in health and science-related careers an opportunity to go deeper into an understanding of medicine, anatomy, health and illness.

Pathways include Biotechnology and Research; Health Care; Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition; and Population Health.

Students will learn through hands-on experiences, including suturing, surgical knot tying, first aid, CPR, emergency response, physical and clinical evaluation. The required curriculum weaves existing science courses along with institute-specific courses that prepare students to enter university with confidence.

However, the institute seeks to instill in students more than just medical, scientific and technological knowledge and competence.

“The institute aims to inspire students to appreciate the human body and all of God’s creation as uniquely made, and to instill a heart of compassion for those in need,” said Dr. Wong.

Continuing with a mindset of growth and innovation, and responsiveness to student needs, the Institute of Bible and Discipleship launched in the spring of 2024 for those students who want to take their faith to the next level.

Headed by Dr. Jim Altizer, the institute of Bible and Discipleship focuses on Biblical servant-leadership, worship philosophy, the development of a faith and science perspective, and chapel planning.

Students study theology, apologetics and discipleship. They attend a summer leadership camp and enjoy guest speakers and class options beyond the required Bible courses at Oaks Christian. They can interact with institute advisory council members such as Greg Kokul, renowned Christian apologist and president and founder of Reasons to Believe.

"When I think about the institute, I feel great hope. I hope that every institute student would leave Oaks Christian prepared to navigate theological and social conversations with great confidence and humility in college," said Head of Bible, Discipleship and Spiritual Life Jeremy Haynes.
