Cullman City Lifestyle’s own publisher and local author, Missy Gurley, shares the inspiration behind her debut book, The Front Porch, and why preserving Southern stories matters more than ever.
Q: What inspired you to write The Front Porch?
A: The idea came from a desire to preserve the simple moments that shaped my childhood. Front porches were a huge part of my life growing up. They were where families gathered, neighbors visited and life slowed down. I wanted to capture those memories before they became stories we wished we had written down.
Q: Why did you choose the title The Front Porch?
A: The front porch has always represented connection. It’s where conversations happen, laughter is shared, children play until the porch light comes on and memories are made. It felt like the perfect symbol for the stories inside the book.
Q: Is this a memoir?
A: Not exactly. While many stories are inspired by my own life and experiences growing up in Alabama, the book is a collection of Southern memories and reflections that many readers will recognize as their own.
Q: What do you hope readers feel when they finish the last page?
A: I hope it sparks memories of their own. I hope they reflect on the times they shared on the front porch, write down a family story or simply spend a little more time on their own porch. More than anything, I hope the book reminds people that the little moments often become the biggest memories.
Q: Has there been a response from readers that has especially touched you?
A: Hearing readers say, “I grew up cooking with my grandmother,” or “This was a perfect gift to give” has meant everything to me.
Q: Was there a story that was especially meaningful to write?
A: Every chapter holds a special place in my heart, but the stories centered around my family are especially meaningful. I also loved including handwritten recipes from my family and my husband’s family. Those recipes are more than ingredients—they’re memories passed down through generations, and they’re truly priceless.
Q: What has surprised you most since the book was released?
A: The overwhelming support from friends, family and our community has been incredible. Seeing local bookstores embrace The Front Porch, especially Arboreadum Bookshop hosting my very first author signing, has meant so much to me. Meeting readers and hearing them share their own front porch memories has been one of the greatest blessings of this journey.
Q: What’s next for you?
A: I’ll continue sharing The Front Porch with readers across the South while working on future writing projects. I’m excited to share more details about what’s ahead very soon.
