For almost all of us, wearing a new outfit lifts our spirits. In some cases, however, that new outfit isn’t just a temporary thrill – it can dramatically change lives.
Such is the case for many of the shoppers at Our Sister’s Closet in Oklahoma City. The high-quality resale clothing store is open to the public, but also provides free vouchers to women who come from backgrounds of abuse and poverty, and who are referred by local government and nonprofit agencies.
The goal is to provide these clients with professional clothing that in turn enables them to find good jobs, provide for their children, re-establish a household and regain their independence.
Often, it’s just the lack of a good interview outfit that keeps women from getting a financially stable job, which makes Our Sisters Closet even more important, said Pam Taber, store manager.
Opened in April 2007, the store is affiliated with the Oklahoma City YWCA, and its proceeds provide financial support to the latter’s services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.
It’s located at 2209 SW 74th St. in Oklahoma City, in the Walnut Square Shopping Center, and hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Our store is very clean, with high-quality items, and you would never think it was a thrift store when you walk in the door,” Pam said. “It feels like walking into a boutique. That’s one of the first things our first-time shoppers usually comment on.”
Our Sister’s Closet is stocked and funded entirely by donations and accepts all sizes of clothing and shoes for women, men and children. All donated items must be new or gently used. Jewelry and handbags also are needed, as well as smaller household items. (They are unable to accept large furniture.)
Additional information and a full “wish list” are available on the organization’s website, OurSistersClosetOKC.com, and donations are tax deductible.
Current donation times are Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and donors are encouraged to call ahead, at 405-631-7171.
“It’s very rewarding work,” said Pam, who has been the Our Sister’s Closet manager for 11 years. “Every dollar spent at our store helps make a difference in the lives of people escaping violence in their homes.”
