Before becoming one of Los Angeles' top luxury real estate agents with more than $1 billion in career sales, Shelton Wilder faced her share of obstacles and moments of uncertainty. Today, she's pulling back the curtain on that journey in Southern But Savage, a funny, heartfelt and deeply practical book that blends memoir with business advice for anyone building a career, brand or new beginning. Filled with personal stories, hard-earned lessons and actionable practices rooted in intentional optimism, the book encourages readers to stop waiting for the perfect moment and simply begin. Known throughout LA for her authenticity, consistency and relationship-first approach to business, Wilder believes success isn't reserved for those with perfect circumstances—it's built by showing up, learning along the way and refusing to quit. While the book is rooted in real estate, its message is universal. "Whether you're starting a business, changing careers or simply trying to move forward after a difficult season, I hope readers see that extraordinary futures can come from imperfect beginnings," she says. Below, she shares more about the inspiration behind the book and the lessons she hopes readers will take with them
What inspired you to write Southern But Savage?
People kept asking how I built my business and navigated the difficult seasons along the way. I realized I was having the same conversations over and over, so I decided to write it all down. The book is the honest story of starting before you're ready and figuring it out as you go.
How would you describe the book?
It's what I wish someone had given me at the beginning of my career. It's funny, honest and practical—part memoir, part business master class. Every chapter ends with a "Positron Practice," offering real action steps readers can immediately apply to their own lives and careers.
Why did you choose the title Southern But Savage?
People often assume that being Southern means being soft. I am warm, welcoming and genuinely hospitable—but I'm also fiercely committed to my values and unwilling to shrink my dreams for anyone else's comfort. That's what "savage" means to me: showing up fully and standing firmly in your integrity.
Is there one story that especially stands out?
Definitely my Shark Tank experience, which happened before I launched my real estate career. I went on the expecting to pitch my product, but instead found myself talking publicly about some very personal issues. Every Shark said no, but being vulnerable connected me with thousands of people—and ultimately helped fund my business. It taught me that authenticity is often your greatest strength.
What's been the biggest key to your success?
Consistency and relationships. I've posted a “Wilder Wednesday” video on social media every Wednesday for nine years without missing one, and I've always believed that relationships matter more than transactions. Nearly all of my business comes through referrals, and that's built on trust earned one genuine interaction at a time.
Southern But Savage will be released on September 15 and will be available through Amazon Books. To celebrate, Wilder will host a book launch party at Capitol at the Brentwood Country Mart on September 15th from 4 to 7 PM.
