Orlando's Enchanted Holiday Tradition: The Nutcracker

Presented by the Orlando Ballet

As the cool breeze begins to whisper through the streets of Orlando, holiday décor starts to adorn storefronts, signaling the arrival of a cherished season. It’s officially Nutcracker season, and this December, the Orlando Ballet invites families to experience its spectacular production at the Dr. Phillips Center, running from December 6 to 22.

This year marks the second season of Artistic Director Jorden Morris’s vibrant retelling of the classic holiday tale, a production that promises to captivate audiences with breathtaking ballet and dazzling high-flying stunts. Picture snow globes, giant puppets, and a magical Ferris wheel—all crafted to create a whimsical world that celebrates the spirit of the season.

Three years in the making and boasting a multi-million-dollar budget, this theatrical feast brings together tradition and innovation. Morris’s vision breathes new life into Tchaikovsky’s iconic score while preserving the story's cherished elements. Clara, the beloved protagonist, is no longer just a passive character; she embarks on thrilling adventures with her prince, even taking to the skies during pivotal moments.

Supported by Orlando Health, the official medical team for the Orlando Ballet, this production introduces eye-popping set pieces and moving characters that have never before graced Central Florida stages. Morris highlights his favorite aspect: the whimsical snow globes that twinkle throughout the performance, adding an extra layer of magic.

Collaborating with an elite design team—including Associate Artistic Director Lisa Thorn Morris, costume designer Robert Perdziola, and lighting designer Joseph Walls—Morris has crafted a visually stunning experience that rivals Broadway. The meticulous attention to detail is evident, from the towering, hand-painted Christmas tree adorned with 3D ornaments to the enchanting Mother Goose puppet that steals the show.

The production’s complexity required over a year of design and construction by artisans from across the globe. Each component, from the vibrant costumes to the intricate set pieces, was thoughtfully created to enhance the storytelling. Stunning visuals include dainty snowflakes in unique costumes, echoing the diversity found in nature, and a giant Ferris wheel with animated passengers that captures the wonder of childhood.

Morris’s dedication to fresh choreography was one of the most labor-intensive aspects of this reimagining. He crafted new movements that allow dancers to express themselves in lighter, more fluid costumes, reimagining cultural dances to reflect sophistication and grace.

As with all holiday traditions, the real magic happens when moments are shared with others.  As a part of Orlando Ballet’s mission to entertain, educate, and enrich the community when it comes to dance,  a cornerstone of the season is a valuable partnership with Orange County Public Schools which invites approximately 16,000 second-grade students throughout Orange County to experience a live performance of The Nutcracker
