Moments of Magic, Joy, and Gratitude

As the holiday season approaches, the Porter City Lifestyle team is excited to share our favorite things about Christmas. From the enchantment of festive lights and children’s excitement to the spiritual practice of prayer through Christmas cards, to heartwarming family gatherings, we share our personal ways we embrace the spirit of the holidays. It’s a reflection on the little moments that make this time of year special for us.

It’s the twinkle of the Christmas lights every evening on the drive home, the yard ornaments that invite a jolly feeling in passing, and the excitement as the cooler weather sets in that Santa is on his way. The Christmas lists, the decorating, the prayers, and the celebrations of Jesus make the season magical. Milk and cookies set out to indulge the merry man, while stockings peacefully wait to be filled. It’s the morning pitter-patter of tiny feet and soft giggles as the sound of paper tearing fills the house. It’s the moments of enchantment and joy that make the season so special.

The most precious part of Christmas is the gift we receive from God, but a tradition I hold dear is the exchanging of Christmas cards. Although many families have moved away from sending cards, I treasure it dearly. I keep a cute box filled with the cards we receive as the centerpiece on our dining table throughout the year. At each meal, we randomly select a card, and that family becomes the focus of our prayers. So often, those prayers arrive when they're needed most, creating a Christmas miracle that lasts all year.

The holidays are such a special time in our home, filled with so many little moments that I love. From our tradition with the smell of freshly baked cookies to the twinkling lights, everything feels a bit more magical. The kids' excitement is contagious as they count down the days until Santa arrives. The laughter of family gathered together, sharing stories, and just being together—it’s my favorite part. There's something about this time of year that brings out extra kindness in people, and I’m so grateful to be surrounded by it.
