After months of ice, snow, rain, and even a few polar vortices, Cincinnati gets that first day of warm air. Windows are opened to usher in a gentle breeze, and you can catch a whiff of spring blooms in the air. That’s when favorite neighborhood restaurants pop open umbrellas and welcome guests to dine al fresco.
Hyde Park, Oakley, and Pleasant Ridge have great outdoor dining within a short stroll. Here are a few to try:
Hyde Park
Dutch’s Larder
This spot in East Hyde Park is an easy walk for many in the neighborhood. Once there, the cozy bar leads to a secluded patio that is under cover in the colder months. The menu includes truffle popcorn, charcuterie boards, burgers, smoked BBQ, salads, and more. Formerly a beer dock, Dutch's is also known for a rotating tap of beers along with house-made cocktails and wine. There’s also a kids’ menu and a selection of board games to amuse the little ones.
Oakley
The Establishment
Sitting right across from the Wasson Way Trail, “The E” has been a neighborhood bar for 35 years. New owners refreshed the property in 2019, adding a new scratch kitchen and a large outdoor seating area. It’s a great spot to unwind with a drink, catch a game on one of the large outdoor TVs. Food choices include wings, salads, burgers, or sandwiches. Weekend brunch is also available, with a variety of breakfast food and drink offerings.
Pleasant Ridge
Café Alma
Visit this relatively new cafe and check out the menu of tasty Mediterranean dishes, coffee, tea, and a full cocktail menu. The roomy café has an outdoor seating area facing the Pleasant Ridge business district. Shakshuka, a Middle Eastern dish, features poached eggs drenched in a savory tomato sauce. If you have a sweet tooth, challah French toast and pistachio waffles offer a fresh take on breakfast favorites.
