Can you share how WEU started?
This is our 39th year! We started off as a seasonal camp back in 1981, and launched our teen OWLS group. Our Outdoor Wilderness Leaders program emphasizes outdoor skills, community service, volunteer work, etc. Over the years, we've added more activities including kayaking, canoeing, ropes course, after school and vacation programs. In 1997, we bought Westfield Water Sports, and in 2001, we installed Southwick’s only semi-public pool. On a separate note, we offer travel tours via WorldWide Travel Adventures, focusing on culture, food and wine, history, scuba diving, and nature & wildlife.
What is the mission of WEU?
We are dedicated to serving kids and their families. Drowning is one of the top causes of death among young children. We look at swimming as an essential life skill for everyone to learn.
During this time of uncertainty, what message do you want to share?
We want to continue working with the local community and to share how to safely experience water sports. Throughout the summer months, we offer one-of-kind adventures for our campers, where we teach kids to support one another, learn group cooperation skills, build confidence, and gain self-esteem. Throughout the year, we teach swimming lessons, snorkeling, ARC Lifeguard courses, and scuba diving from beginner thru advanced.
As a local travel resource, can you share a highlight from a past trip? Last year, we traveled to Alaska and explored the land. My best memory was kayaking on Resurrection Bay at midnight during the solstice.
What are some of your upcoming trips? Early next year, we are heading to Asia and Africa. In the fall, we have a food and wine tour scheduled to Sicily, and then a scuba diving trip to the Maldives. We invite you to join us on our next ADVENTURE!
